Alan,

Your sure having fun now!!!! Nothing like getting her buried in mud to let you know how handy that how stick can be. Of corse, backing out with your front bucket is the easiest if your not too stuck. I usualy use the hoe stick if I need to go sideways, but sometimes, just going backwards is a challenge.

The house is coming along nicely. Thanks for all the updates and coments. It's comforting to know I'm not the only one who buys the wrong sized water lines, or has ten in my supply bucket, but none are long enough!!!

I was thinking that since I was not motorcycle riding as much lately, I must have taken up Backhoe 4 wheeling............... :)

It is still stuck though :( I could not stick nor bucket myself out. I am sure a lot was technique, or maybe more appropriately lack of it, but what happened is the front is too soft to bucket back, and then the hoe itself buried, preventing backwards movement, and the entire front axle is under the mud when I lift with the hoe, and when I pull back, the front axle is acting like a sea anchor in the mud................

Plan for this evening is to get it up above the ground using stabilizers with large wood pads / beams under them and the bucket, and fill underneath with more block and 2/3 rock and RR timbers and get it back up to a workable level.

This is kind of like the welding thread,,, I can read all about it, and I can learn about it from books and the internet,,,, but it sure would be nice to have someone experienced sitting 10' to the side of Roxanne saying, Hey you big dummy, do this............... :) Guess I am learning by fire, but that is where you find your limits.

Two things you can do to get unstuck.

First, lower the front bucket to get the weight off the wheels. Tilt it down to creat a skid. Your bucket will slide over the mud easy when going backwards.

Lower your outriggers and extend you hoestick. This might be tricky, but jam that bucket straight down and really push it in!! Then lift your outriggers just enough to get them out of the way, but keep them down to stop you from flipping sideways.

Then slowly pull, curl or anything you can that will get you moving backwards.

Sometimes you will pull the dirt out of the ground. Just dump it back in the hole and try a differnet spot. Someplace back there you should be able to find something solid. I've even found it works best when only half way out.

If that doesn't work, curl your bucket all the way in and then lower it about 2/3's back. Push down until the back tires are off the ground and clear. It's kind of unsteady, so go nice and slow. See if you can get any movement by pulling your hoe stick back.

Good luck, getting stuck is never fun. Especially with big equipment!!!

I am sorry that you got your backhoe stuck but if it helps any you have made me feel better. I got my 3/4 ton 4 wheel drive with a winch on the back stuck. I wound up having to get a tow truck to come get me out. It is nice to know that other people have problems sometimes with mud :)
good luck getting it out. It sounds like Eddie has given you some advice he has learned from practical experience.

Took me an hour yesterday, but got it out. I put some timbers (baby rr ties) under the front bucket so I could push down and lift the front wheels, then started throwing stuff in the holes, cinder blocks, bricks, 4 X 4 s and then filled all the voids with 2/3 rock. Then I let the front down on that, and one stabilizer at a time, with wood pads under the satbilizers to keep them from sinking, lifted the back end, cinder blocks, bricks, 4 X 4s and 2/3 rock again to fill each hole. Then went back and did the front some more with rock lifiting again. When I had it up even with the surrounding ground, I lifted my hoe stick, lifted my bucket, locked differential, and backed out.

Eddie, I was honestly trying each of those techniques when I got stuck, but what I think happened was that I got my front too far down, and then tried to bucket out with the front bucket first, which essentially dug myself a big hole up front. I think an experienced operator would have got it out as you describe, I just think I lacked the finesse to do the job right. I must say though that I dug a particularly large hole back behind the hoe that I almost drove into when pulling out.....................

Oh, and I left out the extend the outriggers part when trying to hoe stick my way out, and yes, as I was up on the stick, and pivoting sideways trying to shift out of my wheel holes, I realized the importance of it as I fell sideways. One of those life lessons I got lucky on learning....

Rox, Roxanne is the Backhoe. Did you see my other thread or was it this one? Got to have a name for all the equipment, we have Babe, the little blue ox, we had Bob the Bobcat, we had Bertha, the 185 CFM air compressor and now we have Roxanne the backhoe, Think the music group the Police and Eddie Murphy in movie 48 hours.

:) We are a German household, We feed EVERYBODY

I think we need to send in either a marriage counselor or a Phsychiatrist (sp) for me though. That is what the biggest problems are really.

The house will come together.

I did make an extra loop in the driveway so we can get around easier yesterday, little bit of backhoe and tractor therapy time for me.

Loaded up 4 yards of mulch for Hanna, looks like the Hoe's bucket is about a yard the way I load it.

They (Hanna and her freinds) started painting the cieling's yesterday, and did the tile over the vanity.

So Eddie, Tool, is it normal that when I put the hoe bucket in Float I cannot curl it?
