I guess it will all depend on how big your tractor is and how large a tiller you get.  I know a guy with an (approx) 50 HP John Deere and a 6ft + tiller.  He does his garden that is at least an acre if not more in a couple of hours with it, and boy does it look nice.
I will agree that once you reach a certain size, you are definately better off using more conventional farming tools. When you reach that size is definately related to the capabilities of the tractor/tiller combo that you have though.
