Alternator problems?

I would suggest you give cleaning the termanals a try too. If the connection is poor it will give the symptoms you describe.

The battery is about 2 months old, the battery that was in use was not charging completely and I replaced it. Now it looks like it may be the alternator to me.

an alternator with a regulator is already doing this.

when current demand is high, the alt vreg changes charge rate to keep system voltage in range.

this is NOTHING new...

Yep, been that way for quite a while now, and certainly that way in a 2007 Tundra.

My advice, take the battery and alternator to the nearest auto parts store and have them check both. Both Autozone and AdvanceAutoParts checks them for free here. Now, if the auto parts store is a ways away, the multimeter would be a good idea on the alternator. Me, I think it is going to be an issue with the alternator and not the battery. Dealt with this on my Taurus about 4 years ago. Of course, my wife was driving it and tried driving home from work with it at night using the lights. The car died on her just as she left the parking lot. Charged up a couple of batteries that night and brought the car home during the day the next day.

Don't know if your Tundra works this way, but a lot of cars can run without a battery once they have been started IF their alternator is good. My Mustang and Taurus are like that. However, I have no idea about your Tundra. Might want to find a Tundra chatboard and ask. Believe it or not, I have found a Taurus specific chatboard that has been pretty helpful with most of the repairs I have done. Did not expect to see one. Now, the Mustang and F350 I figured there would be plenty of them, and they too have been helpful.

Simple 1 wire to the battery positive terminal.

is this a model that uses ECU to control field and whatnot? IE.. will it gripe and show discharge on the dash for him?

remember.. on a center 0 ammeter.

put alt/genny charge wire one one side of ammeter.. put other side of ammeter to battery or hot side of solenoid.

put ALL loads like lamps and ignition, etc, on the sid eof the ammeter with the alt/genny.

orient wires so that meter is deflecting positive when running.. and negative when ff with lamps on.

this gives you a net charge / discharge setup.

What worrries me is that the alternator connects to the control module, the alternator does have a voltage regulator built in.
