This may not work, but the folks who make overhead hoists have to use the best chain for obvious reasons. Where do they get their chain?

Seems logical at first, but the Grade 70 transport chain (and binders for same) are very specific to the transportation industry and, in fact, cannot legally be used for any other purpose... especially hoisting! Hence, no luck at all with this approach. :(

A couple of weeks ago, I bought Peerless grade 70 3/8" x 20' chains for $53 each at my local commercial equipment company and was able to avoid shipping costs which were about $8/chain when I looked into mail order. Each link has the grade mark on it.

Wish my local situation was as good as yours. I just got home from another wild goose chase to three more truck supply places. Can you tell how hard I'd like to avoid the source/markings risk and shipping charges??? :( Anyway, no luck at all. Just 5/16 inch tops and *ALL* Chinese.

I am getting the distinct impression that all of these professional truckers don't give a hoot one way or the other about using Chinese-made chain & binders... and *never* use over 5/16 inch chain. :(

Am I wrong???

When I posted I should have mentioned Chappal also has 3/8 in stock. I bought 5/16 because I have a small tractor.

I would imagine that you may find some drivers that could care less but I believe that the majority do. Minor commercial motor vehicle infractions can very quickly reap hundreds of dollars in fines. Forget having an inadequately secured load come off of the trailer.

Unmarked chain is legal but can be considered to be only grade 30 spec as are other types of unmarked securement devices. You can find all the info you want at Cargo Securement.

Perhaps ironic to your thread, I hear a radio advertisement on a Syracuse, NY hardware store. One of their highlighted items is American made grade 70 chain.

Next time I get over to one of the equipment dealers that I frequent, I will see what brand and country of origin they carry.

Which location had the 3/8 inch? And do you happen to recall the price?

I am going over to Chappell in Milford (the home of B-B Chain) this morning. I'll stop over in the new building and see what B-B has in stock. Of course I'll expect my commission if you decide to buy.:D :D

I should clarify that my comment about truckers "caring less" was specifically aimed at the Chinese-made vs. American-made point. Assuming it is appropriately marked and of correct size/WLL, both are legal and would not result in any fines.

In regard to the 5/16 inch comment, that was purely based on my observation that out of the 6 professional trucking supply places I've hit, not a single one had chain or binders made for anything over 5/16 inch Grade 70. I've therefore got to assume that size must cover 99.9% of their needs and generally keep them free of fines.

Understood. But as I read the law and calculate my required WLL... while perfectly "safe" in the engineering/physical sense, I would be open to fines and towing if stopped and inspected by the men with the guns & badges.
