Ammunition

I decided to shoot a deer one year with my wife's .243. Mainly because I had never shot one with that caliber and wanted to see how it would do. So a nice one presented itself at about 130 yard doing a slow walk. I tracked it in the scope, and squeezed one off. The animal fell instantly like a sack of potatoes on your kitchen floor!. I remember thinking "wow! this thing must be a real death ray!" Well when I got down there and took a look I saw that my hold was high and the bullet cut the animals spine. No wonder it dropped so fast. No tracking required though.:)

A 308 typically loaded with the correct charge and pill is lethal (1 shot kill) to 500 yards so long as the shooter and rifle is capable.

Myself, I'd never consider any semi-auto as a hunting rifle. By their very mechanical nature they are inherently inaccurate. The gas blowback action must feed rounds with less precision than a bolt rifle...always.

IMO, what makes a semi auto-autoloading rifle so popular is the AR platform. It's a testosterone thing. You won't find any accomplished medium to long range shooters / hunters using anything other than a bolt gun.

You won't find one semi-auto in my gun cabinet.

I don't where you guys hunt that you'd take a 500 yard shot. Where I am, much beyond 80 yards, is rare. Which also means pie plate at 300 yards is more than plenty accurate. Now, I still use a .270 Win in Rem-700, just because I would hate to get a 200 yard shoot and not be able to take it. Also, it was my dad's gun, so it's kinda special to me. He only hinted with it "in season" and used a Marlin .22LR out of season. We ate a lot of spaghetti with vension.

Most of our shots around here are 50 yards or less. The longest shot on deer I have ever made was 130 yards. Many were 60, or less and some under 20 yards. Bow hunting is popular here too. :)

No rifles allowed for deer in Ma. Shotguns only.

And how must the shotguns be loaded? Across the border in Arkansas, they specify buckshot, over here in Missouri, no buckshot, only slugs. Go figure.:confused3:
