Z - Your right, Redline is a Group V basestock. I like their products, but like you, can't justify the cost vs performance. I don't race any of my vehicles, and don't like extended drain intervals, so I stick to Mobil 1 as they offer the cheapest low viscosity oils availble (like 0w-30) for my truck.

As engine oil for normal street driving I don't think the engine will know the difference. .
If you tested the oil you would see the diff.

Acutally last I knew, Amsoil buys their basestock PAO from Exxon/Mobil for a premium price.

AMSOIL purchases additives and base oil chemistries from a variety of vendors. Those chemistries are the most advanced chemistries in the world. In many cases, they are chemistries of such high quality that other companies are unwilling to invest the money.

One of the vendors they work with is Exxon Mobil Chemical (not to be confused with Exxon Mobil motor oil) and well as Lubrizol, Ethyl to name a few.

Many of their top oils use a combination of proprietary Esters and PAO.

From the Feb. 2008 Company Magazine

I thought I would use my column this month to touch on a variety of topics that affect all Dealers and Preferred
Customers in one way or another. We’ll call it a corporate update.

First, I am happy to report that our AMSOIL Center expansion project is now on the homestretch. As many of you are aware, we have installed the most technically advanced blending and packaging systems in the industry. With this, we gain the ability to increase our production capacity by 250 percent. We have also installed 59 new storage tanks, increasing our external storage volume to 1.4 million gallons and our internal volume to 870,000 gallons. We have completed work on a new 30,000 square foot indoor loading and unloading facility, which has the ability to stage six rail cars and four tank trucks. Additional projects include a new laboratory, maintenance facility, storeroom operations and office structures. Our projected completion date is March 31.

This expansion project, of course, was done with an eye on the future. We are now completely set to meet the ever-increasing demand for AMSOIL products. As your business grows, the company will be aligned to provide the products and services you will need.

Z

Along those lines, our advertising efforts have continued to increase. This past year alone AMSOIL ads and press releases appeared in over 220 publications. Our corporate race sponsorships have climbed to approximately 60, and we now sponsor over 300 teams through our Dealer co-op program. We also work closely with several racing organizations on an “official oil” or “exclusive oil” basis. Among them are the American Motorcycle Association, World Power Sports Association and Champ Boat Series. In fact, several corporate representatives recently returned from the AMSOIL World Championship Snowmobile Derby in Eagle River, Wisconsin. In addition to the outstanding exposure we normally receive at that event, my friend Bobby Unser was there in our corporate gear to help spread the word on AMSOIL.

On a final note, as we approach the celebration for our 35 years there are great things ahead for AMSOIL Dealers. You can be assured that the decisions we make at the upper management level are made with your future in mind. I can only imagine the success AMSOIL Dealers will have over the course of the next 35 years.

I trust their company mag as much as the 4-ball test... zero....Most will tell you it is there adds that make the oil not the basestock.

But it is how well the oild performs in your car/truck and not in some lab test.

Cheasapeake Marine, if you get preffered customer you can get that oil for 5.80 a qt. If you get a case it is 5.50 a qt. Shipping and tax would bring it to about 6 bucks a qt. 15w40 diesel and marine is about 48.10 for a 10 qt. jug. and might take 55 dollars for tax and shipping. I don't know of anyone who had a problem running the diesel oil for15k mi. I did but never got a test. I run 5w30 series 3000 and it's 66.00 a 10 qt. jug w/tax& shipping. I will run it to 15k and get a test, if it comes back good I will run it another 15k and skip the test and change the oil. If this works the oil is cheap. After 8k mi. on it still looks very clean and I'm running Amsoil filter fro only 13 bucks. Supposed to last 25k mi. but I will change filter at 15k. mi. I have a Duramax.

Hey Frank, They have performed well for me over the last 30 yrs. I don't know what makes you so distrustful of Amsoil.

ASTM D5183-05
Standard Test Method for Determination of the Coefficient of Friction of Lubricants Using the Four-Ball Wear Test Machine

Developed by Subcommittee: D02.L0.11
See Related Work by this Subcommittee
Adoptions: ANSI Approved
Book of Standards Volume: 05.02

Significance and Use

This test method can be used to determine the coefficient of friction of lubricating fluids under the prescribed test conditions. The user of this test method should determine to his own satisfaction whether results of this test method correlate with field performance or other bench test machines.

1. Scope

1.1 This test method covers a procedure for determining the coefficient of friction by means of the Four-Ball Wear Test Machine.

1.2 The values stated in either SI units or in the former cm-kgf metric units are to be regarded separately as the standard. Within the text the cm-kgf units are shown in parentheses. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents, therefore each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems can result in nonconformance to specification.

1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Specific warning statements are given in 7.3, 7.4, 7.5, and 7.6.

Hiya,

Oh boy, the oil debate. I guess I've used about 50 different oils since I started playing with engines.

Everything from 49 cent a quart Interstate 95 to Bel-Ray to Blenzall caster to Amsoil.

I've never stuck an engine with any of them but since 1978 everything I have with an engine has had Amsoil in it. Maybe I don't need to spend the $ but since I hate groveling on the ground changing oil, I really like the 1 year drain spec. Also, the ease of starting in the below 0 temps and the bit of MPG I pick up isn't bad either.

I will say I did notice a difference in performance in my Diesels with turbos on them when I went from 15w-40 Delvac super 1300 to Series 3000 5w-30. In the over the road trucks and Dodge Cummins, all of them saw a faster RPM rise either loaded or empty with faster turbo spool up also, the MPG picked up a couple tenths.

I also noticed a big difference in throttle response and low end on the Harley's going from the HD oil to 20w50 Amsoil racing oil. (they didn't make a motorcycle specific oil till the late 90's I think)

Now I don't have any numbers to back these up other than the fuel mileage on the Diesels so it's all just my 2 cents,

Tom

Z71- I never stated I do not trust the product. I said I trust there mag as much as there 4-ball test. The mag is a joke (along with most of there bar graphs) and their 4-ball is by no means how good it is. I also trust like only 1% of there dealers since most are wrong. They push the max the oil can do (25 or 35K miles) and most cannot do that.

Lastly is most say they work but do not have the UOA's to show it works as well/best as they state.

Tom- Amsoil made bike oil in the mid 90's. I used it since then. Or course you notice a diff; it is two hude delta in oil weights.

I was a dealer for over 10 year and have tested oils double that. I think they have the best oil going but the "was" 12 month increases now every 6 is getting out of control. What is next Al, every 4 months.....
