Okay, I had to reply. In jest, actually as a bet with a friend, I blacked out half my teeth and put on tattered clothing with grease on my face and in my hair to go into Walmart to buy diapers and milk. He couldn't keep from cracking up, but nobody paid me any attention. The cashier didn't look twice at me...even when I called her "sweet thing". /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The reason that was so funny is that I graduated from one of those stuffy, century and a half old private, all male colleges. All of my fraternity brothers parents were physicians; no, actually specialists, like a cardiac specialist, or owned their own law firm with 100 partners. Me, my father is a heavy equipment operator in the coal mines.

Yeah, I fooled 'em all. I had a free ride, the school paid me to play sports. I own two companies now and play in the dirt when I get home. I dug my own lake, laid most of my own brick, and poured most of my own concrete. It's easy to do, but don't underestimate some of the "bumbs" browsing the isles at Walmart. One college buddy of mine is a teaching physician in the field of oncology, and he frequents the isles of Wallyworld.

That is weird since my wal-mart most people can't even spell college, in English. nevermind speaking it. I hate going there and go maybe 2 times per year. I can't stand it.

I am not turning this into a college war, but most people shop there and there "stuff" is going down hill. Most people do there since the price is low but quality is low.

Again you can buy a "tiger" tv or a Sony. You do not see "tiger" on the top 10 list. Same with oil, most people will not spend $5 a qt on oil. They go for price.

Good marketing and closed competition always gets even the best of the masses! Bill Gates couldn't have done any better than Sam Walton... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The independently wealthy people I know didn't get that way by shopping at Neiman (sp?) Marcus.

I don't enjoy going there because of the crowds, but I shop at WallyWorld for name-brand things I can get there cheaper, for example toys and Mobil 1 oil.

Pete, the cheapskate

Wow. That was one of the liveliest lubricant discussions I have read in a long time!
I treat my equipment like there is no warrenty from day one. I run Amsoil with extended oil change intervals and bypass filtration on my L3410 Kubota & all vehicles. The kubota's oil is coming up on 200 hrs and the last oil analysis was exemplary. Now... warranty stuff : What are the chances of a (real) oil related failure with someone running an oil for 30k miles and changing the filter every 5k (thus adding about a quart per change & ensuring that the oil level is not ever run low) ? slim to none.

Caterpillar used to include charts for exactly that purpose in their engine manuals. An engine that uses a lot of oil can extend the drain interval because it's getting new oil all the time. The engine that uses no oil is the one that needs to stick with the recommended change interval.

Different cause, but also why I don't need to change my oil at all. The bypass filter keeps the oil analyticaly clean in the 1-3 micron range. I change the bypass filter every 3k in my vehicles and add 1/2 to 1 quart makeup oil. Works out to about 3 qts per year in my truck, 6 qts in the van, and 4 qts in the Kubota - but the oil is clean 100% of the time. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It is kind of scarry when you think about it.

A car manufacturer can recommend a 7.5k change interval on dino.

Yet threaten to void warranty for going 10k on synthetic.

I have been told that manufacturers have extended drain intervals to reduce waste oil disposal.

yet dealers don't recommend going over 3k

Until recently I have never gone over 2k on dino and 3k on synthetic. I have never had to rebuild one of my own daily drivers. Have rebuilt many of others who have extended oil changes using dino.

Oil analysis has changed my mind. I'm slowly going longer and testing as I go. I guess that I'm starting to think more like Mike. But all my vehicles are out of warranty '92 Dodge 130k, '99 Dakota 20k, 2000 Focus 34k, '93 yamaha 11k.

I'm kind of getting tired of getting my hands dirty if I don't need to.

( Sure it is only 10% because 90% of people are cheap.
)

Comments like this kill your credibility.

You've just judged over a billion people with that comment... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

( You do not see expensive items in there )
Sure you do.. that's an overly vauge comment.. so vauge that it dilutes the validity of it.

For example.. the marlin lever action 30-30 I bought at walmart is just as good 9 and nerly as expensive) as it would have been from a hi-priced outfitter store. .. and it wasn't cheap..

( Look at the people shopping there )

Boy... judging and talking down to quite a few folks here. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I'm one of those wallmart super store shoppers.. so.. I guess you've just insulted me..( and others ) instead of really trying to calmly discuss the oil...

( Why do you think most people buy MTD for a lawn mower and not JD? )

Um... cause the JD is over priced /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have a muray lawn mower.. why? It was inexpensive, and I have very little lawn to mow... why buy a 3000$ lawn mower when a 700$ one will do it. As for the quality of the product.. Mines been doing good for 9 years now.. pretty good for a 'cheap' lawnmower. same with my push mower.. I got it at pic-n-save.. it's over 11 years old.. starts first pull every time... great for an 89$ lawnmower huh? ( by the way.. my neighbor has burned up 2 jd lawnmowers mowing 3 ac of lawn for the last 3 years.. he's on his 3rd. one.. other neighbor trades out time between a huskie from tsc, a jd, and a cub cadet.. all 2000$+ lawnmowers... he's also got about 2-3 ac to mow....)

( will say your oil at 3 or 5K miles will protect less using dino and the properties of the dino will be far less then most group 4 or group 5 synthetics. )

I didn't say a dino oil would be better at 3k than a synthetic.. I said it would still be sufficiently protecting the engine.

( 1-year or 15K at about $40. If you do your short drains with 5 filters and change every 3K it would be around $52.5 (filters are $4 Each and oil at $1.3 qt). )

By the way.. with 3.5k changes.. like I said in my previous message.. I calculate that to be 44$ I'll pay the extra 4 bucks and have that filer changed 4.28 times vs your 2 times and feel better about it. As for the time.. lets face it.. I own a 'fleet' of tractors... driving a vehicle onto a rampstand and sliding a pan under it and refilling oil is a 10 minute job.. tops..

( Do you want some state run college or Yale )

Wow.. you do have a great way of putting people down! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
