Another Battery!

12 volt Walmart battery in my 8N Ford tractor lasted an unbelievable 18 years ! Naturally when it failed I replaced it with another Walmart battery, that was about 5 years ago.
That is amazing for any battery. However I've somewhat grudgingly decided that the best value in batteries is to go to Walmart and buy the one with the longest warranty for that battery group (size). They're still not great on lifetime but better than similarly priced batteries with shorter warranty from an auto parts chain store. Keeping them fully charged does help. Even a new battery battery left in a deep discharge state will passivate and greatly reduce life and amount of stored charge.

My understanding regarding the life of a battery is, it is the number of cycles cycled which determines, to a large extent, the life of a lead acid battery. In other words, each battery has X number of cycles in it when new. Each time you crank the engine up, you use one cycle. Of course other factors come into play also, such as the bouncing around when in an agricultural or industrial application, excessive heat, etc.
I often wonder the effect the constant stop/start when at traffic lights of some newer vehicles has on the life of the battery and the life of the starter.

I've switched all, except my car and truck, to AGM batteries. An AGM loses 1% of its charge per month but a lead acid will lose 10%.
I live in upstate NY, and we have approx. 6 months of summer and winter. AGMs last better than anything I've used in the past.
AGM is lead acid.

i use a Midtronics battery analyzer plus a carbon pyle tester. I can really see what happens to reserve capacity and starting amperage on an older battery. with these devices, i can show homeowner whats happening. the Midtronics unit also shows if there's a bad cell.
I also use a Midtronics, it’s the modern battery tester. The gold standard.

...recently replace one too...was expecting the core (battery recycle) return payout would increase...NOT

I went out to use the tractor and move some wood chips around. Turned the key and nada, zilch, no clicking, no lights on dash, nothing. 5 years and 21 days on the Legend from Napa. I was sort of surprised because ever since I put that Legend in on 8-01-2019 it's had a BatteryMinder 1500 hooked up and plugged in.

I was hoping that would get me 10-15 years of life from the battery, but nope! So I'm not sure if the battery just had a specific lifespan or if my BatteryMinder Chargers are just not up to snuff; or I was expecting/hoping for to much! Probably the last!

I guess I'll just have to stick with a 5 year lifespan on batteries. I know that's what a lot of you have all said but I was sort of hoping to beat the odds and get a battery to last for a really long time! I ran down to Napa and got another one and I'm still "hoping" for a "long" lifespan but I'm not going to hold my breath!!

$110.00 in 2019 and $224.00 in 2024, $114.00 difference for the same darn item - that "probably" won't even last 5 years this time! Go figure!!
Oh well, I need my beast to fire up at any moment that I have the need so that's what it takes. It's just sorta hard to accept that big of a change in cost for the same darn thing!!
The current battery production standard is to trim the cost so thin that the battery only lasts until just after the warranty expires, which is fairly predictable. However I have had three failures in 2024 calendar year where they lost that bet. Two Die-Hards in my diesel truck, and one Everstart in my car were replace because they failed prior to expiration of the warranty. All these were used lightly, and kept on a battery minder when stored more than a couple weeks.

I think that the quality of lead acid batteries has declined over the last several years. 47 years ago the battery in my new ford truck lasted 9 years in the truck and then another 4 years in my lawn tractor. Lately I have been getting only 1 1/2 to 2 years life from any brand of battery that I purchase. I think they are doing that to get us to lithium battery electric vehicles.

Me, just the opposite. I used to run into so many walmart battery failures in generators, i just warn people to stay clear of them.
