When I read Farmwithjunks post, I almost fell out of my chair laughing so hard! That serves the "gangsta" right! Too bad there wasn't any full beers you could have poured on the seats. And you probably could have poured some in his BOOM box and speakers if he is like the "gangstas" around here with it wide open at 3 a.m.. Great job Farmwithjunk!

I picked up his trash, walked through the woods, and dumped all the bottles in the front seat of his car. Nothing like old beer bottles in 98 degree heat.

Haven't had any trash in my yard since.

Sweet! I'm sure that felt great dumping it in his car. Too bad he didn't have a fish sandwich half eaten along with the bottles.

Can't actually say it felt great, but I haven't had the little punk dumping his garbage in my yard since that day.

Whatever happened to the "chain gangs" that used to pickup trash on the roadsides? I never see them around here anymore. Guess that was a violation of their civil rights

Doesn't seem to be. Our county jail runs those inmate gangs picking up litter. The Jail Commander makes a big point of pointing out how many hours of labor have been done each year. Equates it to labor rates. What he doesn't factor into the equation is the overtime he has to pay for the gaurds.

Once a week I do stop on the edge of my property and pick up the beer cans, beer bottles, and assorted trash.

Now mind you - drinking and driving is illegal. That is what appauls me the most. The people are actually drinking while they drive.

You will probably find that most of the beer cans come from teens who are too young to be drinking legally, so, in an act of pure Darwinianism, they elect to drink in their cars while driving down the road since they might arouse suspicion while parked anywhere semi-lonely. Then they need to dispose of the evidence and act like Farmwithjunk's neighbor's kid.

The state highway department here in Arkansas must go out and pick up all of the stake signs before they mow. Their lot has a huge pile of at least a couple of hundred signs ranging from yard sale signs to metal real estate signs.
As far as the tractors go, the local department has about three brands of tractors, mostly Ford/New Hollands , but they don't have any Kubotas. The state may have Kubotas somewhere but I have never seen any mowing the highway right of ways. The contractors have mostly MFs with a few JDs. I have noticed a few Fendts showing up on interstates.

When my 20 year old son lived with us he was not allowed to smoke in the house, so he would stick his head out the window to smoke & then throw his butts on the lawn. In the spring I picked up several packs worth of butts. Thought about it for a while then threw them under the seats in his truck. A few days later he came to me with a puzzled look - found a bunch of butts under his truck seats???? I said " I know, I put them there. You didn't throw them in the trash so I figured you must still want them, & I put them where they'd be safe." He still smokes but does not throw his butts on my lawn. MikeD74T

I have to do a 'litter check' before I mow my pasture every time, along the fence that borders a road. beople find it necescary to not only throw their beer bottles and cans on the road ROW. but they actually take the time to toss them over my fence.

And police? I've lost alotta respect for them lately. It was like pulling teeth to get one to take a report for damage done to my property from the local kids with ATV's. I can't figure out why parents that live on 1/4 ac lots will buy their kids ATV's.. when the only land to ride on belongs to farms. I called the sheriffs dept, and the officer I was routed to refused to take a report. I had to email the shift leader with a CC to the sheriff himself to get a response .. The response was an apology and then a call back from a very ticked off deputiy that did bare minimum.. took the eport, then close dthe case the same day. I know this because in my county, you can enter your case number into the sheriffs website and it will tell you of progress on your case. The officer literally entered the report ( has a time stamp ).. then the next entry int he report was -closed-.. 1 minute later.

That lost local law enforcment alot of respect from me...

In my opinion, people who litter are very inconsiderate, lacking normal intelligence and LAZY. I see more cigarette packs/butts and broken beer bottles/cans than any other type of trash around here. Of course, I did watch an old man unload a whole pickup load of trash in the City of Chattanooga, TN about 2-3 years ago---a refrigerator, stove and I can't remember the rest. But I did call the police on my cell phone and reported his tag number and description and gave an officer a report and told them I was willing to be a witness in court. Guess what? The policeman actually came back to where I was working after we filled out the report and said he went to the mans residence. He said the man had been drinking and was willing to come back and pick up his trash after his liquor wore off. The policeman said he didn't want to write him a ticket because he was poor and elderly. Needless to say, thats the last time I will ever bother to report trash again in Chattanooga. And the old man NEVER back came and picked up the trash, the taxpayer's(City) did.
And the newspaper always manages to keep throwing out their trash in bags(free newspaper) as well. Makes good confetti when mowing. :D
It would be nice if some people would use the grey matter between their ears once in a while. :)

Serve the court - protect the law. The cops job has nothing to do with helping people. Litter isn't near as bad as when I was a kid but it does piss me off. Had to wear rubber gloves under heavy work gloves for protection from needles when working on sweepers in LA.

My wife does not litter!! And she keeps all of her evidence inside of her car for proof. The only possibility of her littering would be if it fell off of the pile in her car- to the ground. (She parks by a trash can in the garage too) We get the beer/pop, wrapper trash in our ditch too, I've tried to keep it picked up but it returns quickly.

My pet peeve is shredded truck tires that actually are a hazard! I travel the highways big time for my job and if there's a litter problem, this is it. I never noticed a smoke butt or saw a mower hit one, but we all know what a danger destroyed recaps are.

The truckers know their tires are shredding and they just continue on as long as they can. I never saw one trucker stop in a safe place and remove the carcass (black aligators) from the road. Now you talk about litter! That stuff can cause major damage and cause accidents and who hasn't experienced this.

Get a life, cigarette butts must piss a bunch of people off for some reason that I can't fully rationalize and then totally ignore a really huge problem. Go figure!

I guess it's more of a case of "If I don't do it, you shouldn't do it either".

Shredded recaps don't bother me that much. Not a lot around where I live. So I guess it's a case of it's not a "really huge problem".

There are a lot of drunks and smokers it appears. Everywhere I look on the sides of the roads there are beer bottles, cans, cartons, boxes. Lots of cigarette packs and cartons too. I guess a "really huge problem" is directly proportional to how much it is encountered. GO FIGURE!

And I have a wonderful life.

This is what my neighbor boys (22-23yrs) leave after a late fishing night. They dont work just drink smoke sleep and fish. This pond is only 3 feet from the property line. I asked their mom once to have them clean it up. It didnt work so I loaded up the bucket and dumped it in their front yard. Out comes mom told her I brought her something to look at because she must like it. She needs to get rid of them Lazy No Good boys.

Good friend has property down a non populated, dead-end road that has often been used as a dump site; washers, dryers, refrigerators, sofas, etc. in addition to the normal trash.
One day after spotting someone heading down the dead-end road with a pickup full of trash, he grabbed the video camera and went after them. After filming them throwing the trash, he told the two perps. that they had 24 hrs. to remove the trash, or he was going to the cops. They laughed at my friend, who by the way, is a police juror.

Fast forward to their court date, where the judge tells friend to hire a crew to clean up ALL the trash that had accumilated on his property, then have the bill sent to him, (the Judge). He then told the perps that they would have 30 days to pay the bill, or face serious jail time. It took the better part of a day, a crew, a large front end loader, and two large roll-off boxes to clean the area.

The clean up cost was well over $2000.00 if I remember correctly, (this was a few years back), and the bill was hand delivered to the judges secretary.
No it didn't completely stop the dumping, but I don't think those two fellows are repeat offenders.

i head up the adopt-a-highway for our local jeep club.

as we are a farily good size group we opted for a large highly visible location. a huge clover leaf off I-70 (one of the heaviest traveled sections in the country)

we do pickups 4 time a year. we usually cover the north side of the interstate on one pickup then the south side the next time.

each pickup avg 30 bags of litter. When we first started we were avg 100 pags per pickup. but that was years of accumilation of bottles cans and whatnot...

(small soapbox) The governer asked kids to submit ideas to reduce drunk driveing. A fairly smart middleschooler submited an idea to stop selling cold bear at convinece stores. After all the only point of selling it cold NOW was to consume it NOW...(ie while you are driveing)

last time i picked up roughly half the trash i picked up was those large 30-40oz bear cans. Generally only sold at the local gas stations. Comming in with a tie for second was plastic soda bottles and fast food stuff, (containers, wrapers, cups etc)

btw we also have a prize for "most instresting trash found" which is always fun....

oh and also ... you'd be surprised how many wallets/ID's/credit cards we have found... each pickup usually nets at least one of the mentined.

Our Ruitian Club has a festival in October. Right about now, us ancient, unemployed, stiffs are out cleanin' up the side of the roads. After the bags are loaded and hauled away, the local snots will haul plastic bags full of trash to likely spots and toss it out. That's when we call the Sheriff, and he sends us a work crew! New Sheriff this year I wonder if we'll see any prisioners?

One time I was just ready to pull out on the road with 12' haybine. Saw this car comming toward me down the road with paper flying out the window. Pulled tractor and haybine on the road and stopped. When the car had to stop I walked back to driver and asked him if he threw a bunch of paper stuff out the window. He knew enough to say yes. I told him that I didn't want to have to pick up his mess. Suggested he go back right now and pick it up.

Found out later that he was the milk inspector for the neighbor whose tractor and haybine I was using. Told the neighbor about the incident and said that I was right in what I did!

Sounds like we need some more states to get bottle deposit laws passed. In Michigan it's fairly rare to see beer or soft drink containers alongside the roads. I think that kids probably throw out just as many, but ten cents a can is apparently enough to get somebody else to pick them up and cash them in.
