Antifreeze mixture warning

I heard this on the local weather the other night, and was shocked I had never heard it before. They warned viewers to never use more than a 50/50 mix of antifreeze. I've seen this on the antifreeze jugs many times, but always figured a stronger solution was bad for seals or something. What I didn't know was as the concentration goes above 50% or 60% the freeze point also rises. A 60% concentrated mix will protect down to -60 degrees, but 100% antifreeze will protect only to -10 degrees.

The information I read gives the freezing point of 100% ethelene glycol as 8 degree's F above zero .

What many people also do not realize is what effect the water has . The water is what carries the heat or at least the majority of the heat both away from the engine ( summer months ) and to the heater , ( in the winter months ) .
See it every year , people over heated in rest areas or on the side of the road and they cannot figure out why since they they had straight anti freeze in the car .
