I want to put a pet containment system in around my 4.5 acres. I need to trench a 1" to 2" deep around the the perimeter of the property. My choices are to rent a trencher or come up with some homemade device that I can hook to my tractor. Any ideas would be welcome. It would also be nice to rig a way to spool the wire at the same time.

I am doing the same thing in about a month or two. My area will be around 4 acres. I was thinking about using a subsoiler, not sure exactly yet. Do a search you will see a post where someone used a subsoiler to bury black flexible pvc. He rigged up a jig to cut and bury at the same time. I was thinking about trying it that way. someone walking behind could fill in the small trench as you go. If you try this let me know how it works out.

If you really mean 1 INCH to 2 INCH deep.. I would guess a single box blade tooth would do it.

Is this for the transmission antenna for a shock collar 'invisible fence'?

I've run them above ground using fiberglass rods.. or even 1/2 inch sch 40 pvc hacked off in 8" lengths and tapped into the ground.. with a hole drilled thru for the wire.. this also works good for a free standing electric wire / fence charger.

For some reason.. my parents dogs responded better to the fence they could 'see' . With the coalr on and the fence burried.. they would mindlessly run thru it.. and then NOT come back as they figured out the shock problem only AFTER they passed over the fence..

I setup a jig with my band saw and drill press on my bench and turned out enough drilled and cut pipe sections to do my parents 1 ac yard in about 10 minutes of cut/drill. Cu the pipe at an angle.. and it taps in easilly.

good luck

I put in an invisible fence at our old house using my lawn tractor (pre-CUT days). Rigged up a prybar towed behind the tractor with a chain. My wife drove slowly while I "steered" the prybar. It cut a slit into which I placed the wire. It would have been easy to fab a "J" tube to feed the wire behind but I was not as wise back then. And with a CUT, either a subsoiler or a box blade ripper tooth could easily do the trick.

The key to the invisible fence is training. You start with visible flags to mark the boundaries. As the dog gets used to the boundaries you gradually remove flags /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I did my trench with a gas powered lawn edger, with my son following behind me stuffing the wire into the ground with a stick. Real hi-tech /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif, but we did 1500 feet in a couple of hours.

I did basically what SoundGuy described. I used the center tine of the box blade to make the ditch(slit) and clamped a 90 degree sch 40 conduit pipe to that tine (bent toward the back) to feed the wire into the ditch. I camped a pipe to the box blade frame for the spool to spin on & feed from. I have to redo some wire & will probably use my new middlebuster with the plow off to do it.

I'd suggest making one pass with the ripper without the cable, maybe even at 3", just to make sure you don't snag on a tree root or cement or something.

Backing up with a cable laying deal could cause problems. Once you are sure you have cleared obstacles, go for it.

I plan to use something similar to lay my sprinkler system pipe, making one pass near the trees to make sure it will work first.
