Any Radiator Screen Suggestions for YM240??

Sound person,,,I'm certainly not saying that I could possably be as knowageable as you,,not saying that at all,,,,,so,,,,I was just relating my own experience with window screen in front of raditiator,,the only time mine ever overheated was when I tried it,,thats just a fact,,,I mean I'm not making it up just to argue with you,,,and sounds like at least one other person has same opinion as me,,so I'm not the lone ranger here.

Everybody's operating/what they mow, where they park their tractor,,etc. is different,,if you have several hundred acres and don't bring your tractor back home after every job,,than of course you may not [or maybe you would?] have a aircompressor available, to blow it out with,,so if you don't have one,,can't use one,I know,,,but most of us,do a job, than come back home and park it till next job,,,,and it also depends on your tractor and what you are doing,,I really wouldn't need to blow mine out at all if I wasn't cutting grass.
And,to who ever said you bend the raditiator fins every time you blow it out,,well,I havn't noticed that yet,,,but the bottom line is this,,,if you don't have air going through your raditiator, you will over heat fast,,I would rather have some air, than none,,which when that screen door screen gets glogged,is what you will have,,none,,,if you do it,,you need to stop every hr,[at least],and clean it out,,and you had better hope your temp. gage works and is accurate,,,thats my 6 cents worth,,I think I'm on at least second base now,,,,the thing

Chris,
I think our tractors came with the pre-screen about the size of window screen from the Manufacturers??

Maybe they have been doing something wrong all these years including that precreen /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Frankly guys, I kind of look forward to un-a$$ing that seat about every hour, or when I see the temp gauge start to creep the slightest bit. Just shut 'er down, pop the hood, whisk the screen with my ever-handy broom and get back at it.

Yeah,,,maybe so,,maybe some manufactors, make stuff in such a way so as to dummy proof things,,,or at least try,,,sometimes that works and sometimes not,,they can't cover all dummies,,,maybe some manufactors make better ,more lasting heat gages than others,,who knows,,,,as far as getting off seat every 1/2 hr or so to clean out screen,,,well,,some of us need that,,,,some of us are just getting warmed up in that amount of time,,,man,,I'd hate to think I'd have to stop every 1/2 hr or 45 min. and clean something on my lawn mower when mowing my 1 1/2 acre yard,,,I would not buy that brand lawnmower again,,,,or would try and change why I had to do that,,,,,,,the thing

That's uncalled for and doesn't add anything positive to the conversation. That kind of side-cut would have been better saved for PM.

( was just relating my own experience with window screen in front of raditiator,,the only time mine ever overheated was when I tried it )

According to your post, you added the screen, and then didn't service it at the proper interval.. then it overheated.. and then you want to blame the screen?? That souind about right? Once that screen is on there, it is up to the operator to clean the screen off as it becomes plugged. Even if that interval is more often that if the screen was entirely removed.. etc.

I'm also not advocating adding a 'small' screen to a machine that was not designed for it. But pointing out that many units did come with the 'small' screen, as OEM. I believe the yanmar prefilter was a small screen, oem...

( don't bring your tractor back home after every job,,than of course you may not [or maybe you would?] have a aircompressor available, to blow it out with,,so if you don't have one,,can't use one,I know,,,but most of us,do a job, than come back home and park it till next job )

That wasn't the issue i refered to. What I referred to was doing a 'day' job and being away from the shop during that job.. miles away. If my radiator plugged while miles away and needed to be blown out.. I'd be out of luck. on the other hand.. if my prefilter plugged.. i could field service it in about 5 minutes, and be about my way.

( if you don't have air going through your raditiator, you will over heat fast,,I would rather have some air, than none, )

I'd rather have the correct amount of air.. and that would be accomplished by keeping the oem prefilter ( if installed ) clean, thus keeping the radiator clean.

( which when that screen door screen gets glogged,is what you will have,,none, )

That's when you hoist your but off the tractor seat and pull the screen and rub the chaff off, and then stick it back in, and then re-mount your iron horse and go.

( you need to stop every hr,[at least],and clean it out )

I see no problem with that. My NH owners manual actually states to check the prefilter on hourly intervals, or sooner if the temp gauge rises. If that is what it takes.. that is what it takes. The engineers that designed these tractors weren't just playing cards trying to decide how to screw the machine up.. but rather on how to make it easier to service and more durable..

( and you had better hope your temp. gage works and is accurate )

That's a tractors owner's responsibility. know your machine, and perform required maintenance. If a gauge doesn't work.. iconsider that machine 'broke' and in need of being fixed. If I new an important gauge ( oil #, ammeter, Tach, or temp ) didn't work, then I would not use it till I fixed it. Too many things can go wrong trying to 'guess' how hot, how much oil pres, or how the charging system is doing...

Come on guys,,,!! this is what its all about,,,a second opinion,,,havn't you all ever head that???? What I have said is true,,others have agreed,[more I'm sure could],,,just cause you want to stick to "original equipement design",,don't mean much,,you got to admit,,,heck,,they used to say on t.v. ciggettes were good for you..

I just offer a second opinion on using a screen door type wire to filter the air going to the raditiator,,,My experience has lead me to say,,,that in some circumstances,,,the fine screen door screening may lead to overheating,,which may,[in some cases],lead to a blown head gasket,,,,it is my opinion,,in some circumstances,,[tall thick grass,in the spring when every thing has pollan and little fine stuff],to not use a fine filter,,but to blow raditiator out after every 3 hrs or so,,,instead of pulling or in a lot of cases,,removing things so's you can get the screen door screen out and cleaned in the middle of mowing, every 45 min or so,,is just a pain,,which can be avoided,,,,thats all,,,,if you 2-3 guys who hate this idea,,don't want to,,or think this is terriable,,than,,don't do it,,,,just a second opinion,,,,,the thing

I'm home!!!! scored!!! etc....yeah,,,to the original poster,[long forgotten],,,you are now aware of the dangers and agravations of using the screen door screen in front of your raditiator,,,,so,,,,you can now safely try it out,,,and make up your own mind,,it all depends on what you are mowing,,[or not mowing],,how much of a pain it will be to get this screen out and clean it,,etc...etc...,,,,,that was my purpose,,,second opinion and all that,,,,it seems some,,don't like that second opinion,,humm[that was the sound of me saying,,hummm],,,the thing

Maybe the original poster, bassfishrman, should find someone with a parts YM2000 or YM240. That screen may be the same and use it, since it was made for it. Some other parts guys on here may have one or two laying around.
