I dipped Copenhagen for 22 years. I quit a year and a half ago and have never looked back. I did the nicotine gum. I don't remember if it was 2 or three steps. I think I chewed the 8 milligram for about 4 weeks, then the 4 milligram for 4 weeks then the 2 milligram for 4 weeks (maybe it was just 4 milligram then 2 milligram). At the end, I started switching to regular gum. Finally I just got sick and tired of chewing anything (not to mention that my jaw muscles looked like a pitbulls).
There's really two parts to quitting tobacco (dip or cigarettes). There's the physical habit (dip in your mouth or cigarette in your hand) and there's the nicotine addiction. I think getting over the physical habit is probably what gives most folks the problem. It was for me.
