Sixwarden9, I didn't mean to make anybody feel bad about what they are doing. If I did, I apologize. I totally agree that I won't be able to "make" somebody quit. It has to be up to you. But if there is someone out there that is on the fence which I felt was being portrayed with "tell us how it goes"), a little encouragement can't hurt.
Also, being only a week into my quit does not make me an expert. I hope we cross paths in a thread a year from now so I can let you know how my "quit for life" is going.
You say my post was all doom & gloom and no support. What did you want me to say? "Yeah stevenf, you're probably going to die on your tractor and be plowed into your food plot.....that's gonna be awesome!" I'm trying to offer support for those that want to quit (hence the reference to the website that started this thread). If you want sympathy for your inability to quit dipping, I can't offer you that.
As for the comment that a dipper never quits, you are wrong. Don't discourage those that might want to quit just because you can't.

ATTENTION: IF YOU WANT TO QUIT DIPPING, SMOKING, DRINKING, LOOKING AT ****, DRIVING A CHEVY.....YOU CAN!!!!

I know you don't want to hear it.

( Dipping chewing smoking I agree is not good for me but neither is the toxins that the gov allows industry to spew into the air each day. The tabacco industry got a bad rap in my opinion. That industry(tabacco) is not the only one at fault for many ills. They are just the ones that got caught. )

I agree as well. Guns fall into the same category.
There are many products out there that can kill you. It should be up to the consumers to use/avoid them responsibly. Don't blame UST because your grandpa died of lung cancer. Don't blame Ruger because the local gas station attendant got shot. But also, don't blame the industries for the toxins that are being kicked into the atmosphere.....move to the country!

Reminds me of a joke (as usual). /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

A very old gentleman is talking to a young kid. He says to the kid, "Sonny boy, let me tell you something. All my life, I never drank, I never smoked, I never did drugs, I never chased women, and tomorrow I'm going to celebrate my 100th birthday!"

The kid looks at him and says, "Oh yeah? How??"

***

Just a joke of course. Here's to healthy, sensible living, moderation in all things, and complete abstention from some things. I quit smoking cigarettes from 1986 to 1994 and never thought I'd smoke again. I bummed one from someone 12 years ago, and am still a slave to them. During that time, I quit once for a month, another time for 45 days, and I went without them for one week this month. It amazes me that I keep making such a horrible, foolish choice.

OK, that does it. A friend of mine gave me the name of a very good hypnotist a while ago. I am going to call her tomorrow, and will keep y'all posted. Life's too precious and amazing to squander it like this - and that's no joke.

I really appreciate you putting this website and discussion board up here on TBN, it gave me the motivation to give this quitting thing a try, I am a can and a half a day user of Copenhagen, my last dip was a little under 48 hours ago, so wish me luck, good luck to others that this inspired,

I gave up smoking many years ago, the wife 6 years ago. Now we are getting more and more anti-smoking mullahs, even made our house a non smoking house. Smoking is forbidden in all bars and restaurants in Norway. Belive or not, it works fine, the bar employees loves it. The business was not affected. A good advice:
By stopping these bad habits you will save a lot of money. Take advance, buy a new tractor today for the money you will save the next years.

Brian -

Congratulations on deciding that you want to stop using tobacco. That puts you way ahead of the game. The people I feel sorriest for are those who don't seem to believe that tobacco is harmful, and therefore see no need to quit. It cracks me up every time I hear, "But I like to smoke". (Or dip). And I'll say, "Yeah, and heroin addicts like heroin".

I posted on 1/31 that I was going to contact a hypnotist and make another attempt at stopping smoking. Well, I didn't call her, and I feel bad about that, because I said I was going to. I came very close to calling her - looked all over for her name and number, which my friend has given me twice now - and was about to call him to get it again but just decided that I was just going to stop smoking, period. I didn't need yet another excuse .... "Oh, the hypnosis didn't work". No one is putting cigarettes in my mouth and lighting them but me.

I haven't smoked one since the night of that last post - two weeks now. I still can't breathe very well, but that's supposed to improve with time. At least I've stopped doing harm, and my spirits are much better, like a dark cloud has been lifted off of me. It feels very good to not be doing one of the most harmful things that one can do to one's body.

It always struck me as very odd that I take better care of my equipment (especially my tractor of course) than I sometimes do of my own body. Of course it's not the same thing; I'm not addicted to abusing my equipment, while smoking (and dipping) is one of the most powerful addictions there is. But it can be beat, once you decide to beat it.

One "trick" is to concentrate on all that you are gaining, not on what you are giving up. Tobacco use is incredibly pleasurable because nicotine has re-wired your brain to respond only to nicotine, and no longer to the naturally-occurring "pleasure" chemicals in the brain. "Gut it out" while your brain gets weaned off of nicotine, and you can enjoy vastly improved health for the rest of your life. Use the patch if you need to, or chew some nicotine gum.

In the end, you'll save a huge pile of money, save your teeth and gums, improve every cell and organ in your body, and have a whole lot more energy for all those projects on your list. You might even start getting some cardiovascular exercise and watch your health really take off in the right direction. You'll sure smell better and look better, and I bet you'll have more self-respect too.

Life is short, and tobacco makes it shorter. I know any of us can beat it once we decide to. I'm not telling anyone what to decide; I think I'm just encouraging you to decide.

I've always thought that deciding to quit using tobacco is a lot like a surfer deciding what wave he wants to catch. He knows which wave feels right to him, and no one can tell him what wave is "the right wave". And if he catches "his" wave and then wipes out ... well ... he can give up and go home, or he can paddle back out and catch another one. In the end, the ride is going to be worth the effort.

I know we can all do it if we really want to.

Yoda said it best in "The Empire Strikes Back". "Is no try, only do. Do, or do not".

OK CT if you can do it I can to.
My problem is the dip and I have put off replying to this thread because I did not want to confront the problem.

Strange really I am a very health conscious person. I have worked out for 26 years, take a handful of vitamins and supplements everyday. I am 46 years old 5' 11" 235 lbs, ware size 34 pants and a size 50 blazer. I need to lose about 10-15 lbs. But I cannot kick the habit of the dip, tried several times.

But I guess I will give it a go. I'll need the gum and WILL go Thursday or Friday and get it.

Anyone want to start a support group /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
