Anybody Dip/Chew?

I dipped Copenhagen for 22 years. I quit a year and a half ago and have never looked back. I did the nicotine gum. I don't remember if it was 2 or three steps. I think I chewed the 8 milligram for about 4 weeks, then the 4 milligram for 4 weeks then the 2 milligram for 4 weeks (maybe it was just 4 milligram then 2 milligram). At the end, I started switching to regular gum. Finally I just got sick and tired of chewing anything (not to mention that my jaw muscles looked like a pitbulls).

There's really two parts to quitting tobacco (dip or cigarettes). There's the physical habit (dip in your mouth or cigarette in your hand) and there's the nicotine addiction. I think getting over the physical habit is probably what gives most folks the problem. It was for me.

Started when I was 13 and have been doing it ever since. I figure a man has got to have a vice, so snuff is mine.

Those of you who want to quit, good luck. Those of you who have quit, congrats! I know you liked the pay raise you got from not buying snuff.

(Anyone who dips Cope, I highly recommend Husky Fine Cut Natural Brand, it is the closest thing to Cope I have found and at $1.50 a can, I can deal with the slight taste difference.)

I agree! I used to use a cigarette to point with and do all kinds of other gestures. When someone asked me a question, I'd pause and take a drag before answering... stuff like that. It was really hard to find something else to use when I finally made up my mind to quit.

I remember I tried chewing tobacco when I was in the 6th grade and puked my guts up. Too bad I didn't do the same the first time I tried a cigarette. It would have saved me 30 years of wasted money, health, and coughing. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

When I read the title to this thread, I thought "Oh Man, someone found some free dip".

I dipped Cope for at least 20 years but, as far as I'm concerned. they priced themselves out of the market. I didn't care anything about supporting race cars. Now I dip Grizzly, at a third the price of Cope /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Man, you guys ain't supposed to be talking about what you dip on a "quitting dip" thread.

It's been said that quitting dip is harder than quitting heroin (due to the large amounts of nicotine). So far I feel like I'm in a deep fog and that somebody shot my best friend. But I'm sure it will get better the further I get away from it.

I dipped for 14 years. Kodiak, can a day habit. I'm leaving it. It hasn't done anything for me and I'm not going to let it one day kill me. You guys that keep the habit, I know I won't be able to talk you out of it. The nicotine coursing through your blood stream won't allow it. But if you decide to respect your body and your loved ones (they probably wouldn't like it if you were dead), take a look at the website. The pictures alone will make you want to quit.
I just hope I have the strength to get past all of the associated "dip" events in my life. Tractor, golf, hunting, fishing, surfing the net!

Wish me luck. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I've quit Skoal on every New Years the past 20 years and even made it till March one year. I think I've got it licked this year though...

My problem is I can't stop at a gas station w/o seeing the stuff in there calling for me. Now my son is old enough to go fillup for me and so on top of that I'm making a special point to stay away from any place (grocery, liquor store, baitshop) that sells the stuff. And to stay away from anybody else that dips. Out of sight, out of mind.

Nice waking in the morning w/o that dirt taste in your mouth.

Okay. Time for a locker-room style pep talk.

You don't need luck. You need willpower. The ability to triumph or fail lies solely in your hands.

You just have to face one day at a time. Each day you make it tobacco free, the easier it gets. I decided to quit the day my daughter was born. You just have to make up your mind that "today's the day to quit". You can find all kinds of excuses to start again. That's all they are, EXCUSES.

Thanks for the pep talk ganzer. I know I can and will do it.

Hey nut, how about pay at the pump? Seriously, check out the website. It adds accountability to the self will that ganzer speaks of.

Not to get too personal.

On Sunday, I hugged my 45 year old brother and said my final goodbye, before I kissed his cheek, left his bedside and flew home to Texas as an emotional wreck. He's in hospice and not expected to last the rest of this week. He'll leave a 15 year old daughter, 19 year old son, wife, brother and parents with a hole in their hearts and a void in their lives.

He was diagnosed with bladder cancer, as a result of smoking, 3 years ago. It had spread to his kidneys, liver, lungs, brain and bones. All curative options were tried and exhausted. He was never able to quit smoking, even when he was taking chemotherapy. He allowed it to take his life. He allowed it to beat him all the way to the end.

I quit dipping a year and a half ago, after spending nearly 22 years in its grip. I look at my wife, daughter, parents and friends and vow to never let anything, that's within my control, rob me from them.
