Well said Builder, I felt the same way. Ford also raised the prices on these trucks by around $10K over that same period. I remember looking at new Ford Diesel pickups for $28-32K around 2000 and now they want $40-60K for something that is less reliable and gets worse fuel economy
.

Right. It's not like they gave you a vastly improved product. I mean the transmission was improved, but there's no way the the 6L is a more reliable diesel than the predecessor 7.3L, and it's only like 40 more lbs of torque and 50 more HP. The rear is still the same old generic l/s 10.5" rear. Aside from the coil over SFA front end (which I really like) I actually think Ford made most of their improvements in "gadegtry", like power folding mirrors, sync and the integrated trailer tow.

The other thing is now that the 6L has basically become the red haired stepchild of modern diesel trucks, their trade-in value is horrendous. Most guys won't touch a used one-that's a big red flag. That must be a sad feeling knowing an owner of a 6L Ford has lost so much value because of perceived reliability problems.

I'm not exactly sure what you consider "same old generic". My rear says "Dana 90" and the front says "Dana 80". I think you may have the axle part confused with something else. I obviously dunno how the 6.0 PSD is going to hold up as I've stated, but I'm curious as to what you run that is a lot better than the Dana 80 and Dana 90?

Since I've been in the auto business for over 20 years, I gotta point out that the trade in value of all full sized pickups (diesel in particular) and SUV's is horrendous. That is why I bought now. I can buy a couple year old diesel from any of the 3 manufacturers for about 35% of what the MSRP was 2 years ago. Every truck I considered buying had a sticker price of nearly 60k and I could have bought any of the three for under 20k. I go with one of my dealer friends to the factory auctions and that is where I buy. Depending on the condition and miles, '06 models from GM, Ford and Dodge could be had anywhere from 15k to 20k. Depending on the miles and condition, your pickup has a wholesale value right now of between 18k and 22k.

What model Ford do you have?

All F-250/350 SRW's have a 10.5" Sterling rear and a Dana 60 front axle. (Actually, my old F-350's had cheapened Dana 50 front axles-another thing I disliked about Ford, for about 3-4 years, they actually dropped from a Dana 60 to a dana 50, only to go back to the dana 60 in ~2002).

No Fords have a Dana 80 front axle. The F-350 DRW does have a Dana 80 rear, though.

As far as I know, there is no "Dana 90".

That's obviously because of the price of diesel fuel, but I'd bet the ranch that similarly equipped 6L Fords, GM DMAx and Dodge Cummins, I'd bet the 6L brings lower trade-in because of all the 6L problems like the fella that posted this:

"So far I've had nothing but trouble with the Ford 6.0 PSD".

and this:

"I have not yet sold my old Dodge and am embarrassed to say I may go back to it since it seems not only more powerful but vastly more reliable than the Ford. My Ford goes back in the shop on Monday. :(

Has anyone had a 6.0 PSD that has been reliable? Mine is completely 100% stock (no performance mods at all) and it still won't stay together. Even under warranty, I am not open to having to take my truck for monthly dealership stays that seem to average a week. I really do like the rest of the truck, but so far this 6.0 PSD seems to be a disaster. Maybe I ought to look into the conversion kits to put a Cummins in the Ford. Obviously I'm fishing to see if anyone has one that has been reliable. Anybody?"

Um, yes and not really. No doubt the crazy, and unjustified, high price of diesel has killed the diesel pickup market. What it did was take all of the "just want one because they are cool" diesel buyers out of the market and left only the "need a diesel" guys in. I was sort of shocked how many were in the first category. And, no, surprisingly enough; the Fords with the 6.0 engine do not have a lower residual value....at least not at this time. You'd better hold on to your ranch for now.

As I've made extremely clear, I am not very sure about the 6.0 liter PSD. That was the entire reason for the thread. However, there is no market indicators in resale value reflecting that underlying fear I have. My elevator mechanic friend was the one who informed me that they all went with the Dmax because even the very first year they were out, they put out more hp and torque than any year of the 7.3 PSD engines. I'm well aware of the positives as well as negative aspects of the GM models. And, contrary to what some buyers thing, the Allison transmission in the pickups is not the exact same transmission as in the larger medium duty trucks. They are very good transmissions, but there certainly have been failures.

I obviously don't mind the fact that you despise the 6.0 PSD, but you clearly appear to have rose colored glasses when it comes to the Dmax. I suppose I'd consider myself sort of Dmax neutral. If I'm not mistaken, the GM offerings also have the strongest frame (I'm talking newest models - I really didn't look at anything older than about 06) as well. Overall, the GM offering is okay, but it doesn't do anything particular for me. My guess is that the engine is likely better than the 6.0 PSD, but I strongly feel it does not have the durability of the old 5.9 Cummins either. GM pickups are not problem free, but they certainly are not bad trucks. I just don't particularly care for them. With the price I paid for my Ford, I can still get out of it okay for the next couple of months at least if I don't like it. Thus the statement that I'm not going to get rid of my old Dodge.

Heard Nissan was coming out with a 3/4 ton and 1 ton truck in 2009 with Diesel engines. Anyone know if that is were the navistar is going. If not what kind of Diesel will the Nissan's have. Japanese name with German Engineering----ought to be interesting.
