I didnt want to see an american company fail, I wanted to see the american company succeed on its own without government interference and with the employees helping the company rather than hindering it

What employees were hindering? I think we were all willing to give up something to keep our jobs here in the US instead of GM shipping more of our jobs to Mexico and other overseas locations.

Rather than expecting the employees give up the huge debt the company owed for retirees benefits due to poor labor contracts for the last 40 years, and better work rules for the company to expect the employees to work efficiently, and maybe more modest pay rates, instead the company went the route to expect that the citizens of the United States make up the cash that was driving it to bankrupsy

No company is too big to fail, if you wanted your job there, you should have made the difference, and not expected the United States to pay billions to save your job

I was always a big fan of the Fort Wayne plant, I have bought 5 trucks built there, Still driving the 06 GMC but never again.

The number one Chinese car is a Chevy. The Buick Regal, designed and built in Germany, The Camaro was designed in Australia, built in Canada. My mother is an exec at GM - this year she will be going to China, Brazil, Germany, Italy, South Korea, Japan and Mexico, and most of them for multiple times. She has nearly 1200 people that report to her. She tells me all the time that she has to stay up late because they have to have conference calls with Germany, Korea, China and since they are all on different clocks they have to pick awkward times. Point being that I'm forced to buy GM, but if not I would still buy one of the big three even though a lot of cars are built and designed elsewhere that wear one of the big three's logo's.

BTW, Since this thread was started I called her up and asked her about the trucks that were coming out. She said they were a complete redesign and looked really good of what she had seen - not like the photos in this thread. She said they have a full one made and has to go look at it yet, all she has seen is pictures so far. I guess we wait longer.

Sounds like mom has alot of insight on what's going on globally. Note the export mentioned (the Buick) is not built in America. Neither is the Chevy Avalanche. It's built in Mexico along with the Cadillac EXT and some crew cab full-size trucks(same product as Flint Assembly). If you purchase a crew cab truck, check the driver door to see where it was built. It could be from Mexico instead of Flint,MI. Ft. Wayne builds regular cab and extended cab 1500's,2500's, and 3500's. All crew cabs are split between Mexico and Flint.

I'm not going to try to change your mind. I'm sorry you feel that way. I left my home back in 06 due to the closing of my home plant. I've worked at 4 other GM facilities since then to keep my job. I think I have gave up alot. I don't work in the big glass building in Detroit or call any major shots. I'm just a guy thats trying to make a living and feed my family. I don't expect you to understand until you have walked in my shoes.

I am not necessarily blaming you as an individual, just the whole Union thing.
I have been a UAW member, and 3 other unions in my life
I watched as the UAW was able to time after time get the same guy back at least 9 times at IH in Fort Wayne, after he had time after time walked down the line and threatened people. Each time the union got him back. Everyone in the department was scared to death of him.

I have friends who work with you and brag how some of the skilled trades take 4-5 people to do the work of one person.

America is never going to be great again if this is how we expect our companies to operate.

The whole world is going lean and we still are the "fattest" operations, where do you honestly think companies are going to locate?

I have to say MOST of us at Ft.Wayne work hard and are glad to have a job. There is always a pile of bad apples at any plant. These are the ones the media interviews on the local news to make us all look bad.

Topkicker...I for one will say that you make all of the GM employees look good, and I mean that.

Ignore this whole government motors thing, GM needed help and they got it. If Ford wouldn't have buried themselves in debt a year before the credit markets siezed, they'd have been in the same situation or worse.

Someone said that GM vehicles only last 2 years..BS...I get an easy 5 years and 200K out of every GM vehicle I buy...I will continue to buy GM unless I'm let down. That has yet to happen.

Topkicker I'd say the same thing. GM had a bad stretch a while back, but that was everyone's bad stretch. To say GM makes junk is flat out wrong. They make very good vehicles and they have a lot of stuff unreleased that will be bring GM back to its glory days when if you had a Cadillac you were the king of town. I buy GM because my Mom works there, as I've said, I get the family discount but if I wanted something else I'd buy it. The only vehicle I've been tempted at is a Ford F150 Raptor - they look really slick IMO - but I'd have no use for one with the vehicles I have. I've yet to have a lemon GM and personally I have no compelling reason to switch brands - I don't see any other brand that has any better features(I'll give Ford the Sync system but I'd rather have my life saved if I'm in a crash by Onstar then to be able to push a button and text someone)

We still own and drive regularly a 2001 Yukon XL with 185k + miles on it. Its been a great vehicle, has the original engine and auto trans. My impression is that the later ones aren't near as well made. I have a friend with post bailout truck and he has had nothing but trouble with it. Plus the interior is cheap plastic everywhere, not even close to the older ones. This is a loaded truck too.

My GMC is "post bailout"...It's been absolutely fantastic. No different than the other GM's I've owned over the last 25 years...
