I am going to pull the generator off and check it out tomorrow if I get a chance. The surface where the brushes ride on may also be very dirty and not making a good contact. This unit looks like it has sat in a shed for a few years without running. The carb was full of slime and the gas stunk like shiit. It does purr like a kitten now.

Cleaning the brushes and the slip rings is probably a good idea. Keep working, you will get it working and we will both learn a lot. That's worth the effort by itself.

Bob,

I sure hope it works. Otherwise I have a lead anchor with a great running 14HP B&G industrial motor.

JimR, I had a problem with my 4kW Coleman. It was a capacitor. After replacing it I had to remag the field like you have tried. Its been too long ago to give you any details. Sorry.

Capacitors fail from age and non-use. Is there one on this generator?

I don't know. I will know tomorrow if I get time to play with it again. I don't have it here. It is in my barn next door at the old farm I'm restoring.

Years ago I had a small Coleman 2K generator I took camping. It did not have any circuit breakers, just a pair of 110V duplex outlets. I mainly used it to run two battery chargers to recharge my camper batteries during the day at the campsite (no electric power there). I had it running one morning with two 10A battery chargers plugged in when the wife decided to make breakfast. In doing so she used the electric toaster without telling me so I could unhook the chargers. When she pushed down the toaster arm I heard the generator start to bog down. Before I could get up to see what was going on the generator RPM went right back to full speed. Turned out the generator got overloaded and the armature blew.
I ordered a new one and when I replaced it I added circuit breakers to the outlets to prevent another occurrence. Is it possible the generator was overloaded and the breakers failed to open as they should have?

George, I'm not sure what happened yet. I didn't get a chance to rip it apart today. I've been replacing a roof at the old place. My buddy said that if we can't fix it he'll use the motor on his woodsplitter.

I used to have a Coleman generator. It described the flashing in the user guide.
