Im looking to step up to the woods PRD8400 finish mower. It says the rating of the tractor needs to be 25-40HP. With the B2920 rated at 29HP do you think it could handle it mowing 5 flat acres of your average type grass or would it constantly be overworking? Curious if anyone is using a mower that big on the B2920. Thanks.

Overloading a PTO driveline is never a good idea, especially on a light weight transmission housing... It can get rather expensive.
Even an occasional overload is not going to be helpful .

I am not specifically familiar with the Orange tractors, but have the opinion they are a quality well built unit, and therefore you should be able to utilize all 29 HP if you want to, even at the rear PTO. I have the Green equipment and mow with 72" finish decks in very tall grass (mow about 20 acres, five times a year, grass height varies from one to two feet and thick / dense in certain areas). I mow at ground speeds that typically engage all 27 HP or 32 HP respectively (JD zero turn 777 and JD 2032R). They are both 72" MMM and not rear PTO versions. If you are mowing a 'lawn' on a regular basis with an 84" finish deck, in grass 4 to 6 inches in height and at ground speeds of 4 to 6 mph, I don't think you would be pressing the limits at all, regarding HP consumption and excess load on any power train component. Happy cutting.

Tractor HP or PTO HP? I think the 2920 is only 21-22 HP at the PTO.

Probably would work for easy cutting. But in borderline cases, even 29HP will run out pretty quick.

Thanks guys. I also emailed woods equipment and they said it will handle it just fine as long as I don't cut when it's real tall. I was just curious if any one is actually using a finish mower that size on the B2920

I'm going to say it's way too big for your tractor. You are low on PTO power and tractor weight. A mower that big will really make the front end light and will swing the tractor around on turns and hills. A neighbor has that same mower and uses it on a M4700 and it seems to be a good match.

You say the area is FLAT. Because if it's not, you arn't going to get a very good cut with a seven foot mower. It's the reason why nothing really cuts as nicly as say a 22 inch push mower. It just follows the terrain better. My bigger mowers all have seperate wings.

I'm running a 6' rear discharge finishing mower on my L3800. It feels like HP and size are balanced, so I can move along and get the acreage done. If I had to slow down I might just not have the time then I'd let it go and wait til the brush hog was more useful. I'm fairly certain that 84" and 29hp will force you to slow down.
But on second thought if you get the 84" mower you could then justify getting a bigger tractor. :D

Looks like no one has an actual experience answer for you which can possibly be an answer itself or taken as a "No, no one has done it" answer.
I can give a close actual experience answer and then you can go from there. I owned a B7800 which is the next step up in HP and I think maybe a bit more in size so you do the difference factoring.
I had a 6' RFM red French brand lightweight mower on my B7800 and on my field converted to yard by just mowing the red rfm kept breaking. I also have some fairly steep hillside with some flat front yared with gullies and rocks. Never had any power or lack of power issues. Traded the lightweight 6' tearing up mower to a Landpride 6' RFM (tank in weight and thickness of metal) probably equal to a Woods in weight. With the Landpride on the back of the B7800 I never had any power issues with mowing or climbing the steep hill side but at the bottom of the hill when I made my turn the mower would swing the B7800 (with FEL always on) around which surprised me the first and maybe second time but it just became the way I made my turns at the bottom of the hill from then on with no problem or concerns. I also was never the full throttle and still mostly am not now kind of person. Meaning I never used full throttle on the B7800 pulling the 6' Landpride mower
I traded the B7800 to a L3240 (twice the tractor weight but same HP as the B7800) and the mower had no impact on turning the tractor but the tractor would really slow down as I was nearing the crest of the hill which shows how much impact tractor weight has on the HP usage.
I know I didn't answer you direct question as no one else did but I give you some actual experience with near to your situation and you draw your own conclusions.
I personally believe your tractor may turn the blades and pull the weight under flat and ideal grass levels on the bigger deck but I believe you will be stretching the tractor to or beyond it's maximum capacity and if you incur some gullies or hills I believe you'll know if you have exceeded its capacities.
Good luck and if you go for it you can be the guy that steps forward and tells others of your experience and how well or how not quite so well it worked out for you.

I'd take a shot at a 72" but not 84!

I have an L3940 with a 72 inch finishing mower and if the grass is a little too tall or wet even the 39hp starts to stall and I will have to slow way down or sometimes lift it up to move past a bit.

So I can say I wouldn't want an 84 inch on my L3940 it would just be a bit too much mower for the tractor.

I second what art said, try a "72" bet that size would be a nice match for you.

My owners manual for my L2800 specifies largest mower to be 72" and that is a tractor that has more PTO power and more than 1,000 pounds of weight over a B2920. I wouldn't want to go over a 60" with that tractor. Just my opinion.

Thanks guys I appreciate the input! If I end up getting the 84" I'll either tell you how good it is or ask you to buy it. Lol

Mower width is all about saving time. Calculate how much time you will save with an additional 12" pass vs. the potential need to slow down to accommodate the 84" unit.

I'm a busy guy but wouldn't feel that the cost of a larger mower, especially one that has the potential to slow me down, would be a good investment given the relatively small savings in time to mow. Add in potential overload of a tractor and...........

Nice Caribbean sunset for Ohio, by the way!

Both nice sunsets.

I have a B2620 and use the 60" mmm. I would say add 3 HP and 12 inches you'd be about right. Let us know how it all works out.

I don't doubt the b2920 in running the mower. But you will have a heck of a problem lifting the mower. The bxx20's are light in the front end. I used a 5' Woods behind my b2620, and when I had the mower up I had to take my tine turning. If you don't have to travel or turn with the mower lifted, then you should have no problem turning an 84" mower. Or if you have a fel, then you may be ok.:2cents:

I ran a 72" BEFCO finish mower for 5 years behind my B2910 (very similar to your B2920 in PTO horsepower, size, and weight). The tractor handled the weight and size of the deck without trouble (either with the FEL on/off). But, in the Spring or when the grass was lush, I had to run in Low most of the time to keep ground speed down, otherwise it was too easy to load up the engine/hydro. We have a good bit of slope here, and a lot of dense pasture grasses. Later in the season when things were dry, I could run in Med mostly.

Just my $.02, but I got the sense that 72" was about the max my 22 PTO HP could handle consistently without putting excessive pressure on drive-train components. I'm not an engineer, but after all those hours in the seat, feeling and listening to the feedback from the tractor in lush and dry conditions, flat and slope, 72" just felt like it was right on the edge of being too much. Sounds like your topography may be slightly different.

I always felt like I wanted to be mowing faster than that 72"/22 PTO-HP setup would allow for my terrain.

If you do decide to go with 84", I'm sure staying extra diligent on blade sharpening and keeping a clean deck will help with ground speed.

I run an 84" Woods rear discharge finish mower on 36 hp without any hint of a problem. Keeping the blades sharp will greatly reduce your power requirements. You may not be able to pick up the entire unit without some front weight, but the driveline power needs are low. I use the Gator blades for chopping up sticks, leaves and dog toys. I even cut fields with mine by raising up the deck with the gage wheels all the way down.
