Are ATVs/UTVs overpriced?

We have been completely debt free since 2014. That has opened a lot of options for us... A lot. I'd take those options, over a loan on a luxury item, any day.

It's hard for me to give up my 2.75 fixed mortgage but otherwise on the same page.

The problem is there are also a fair amount of accidents, almost always related to speed, drinking, or both. They do not realize if you hit a turn too hot in the mountains it can be a LONG LONG way to the bottom...
So what. Folks don't want to see the riff raff making a nuisance of themselves, yet following through finding ways to knocking themselves out is a bad thing? I love ripping up a hill and doing backflips with my UTV. Oops, bonk. Last words "I'm not the hero everyone thinks I am", Eulogy, "he was doing what he loved" - congregation "astalavista, dumb azz".
And it's like anything else, if someone has a hobby, the excuses are endless for supporting it. Pick a hobby, name the excuses. The farm here has everything from quicksand to cliff faces. I don't need to ride around on either. A pickup works just fine.

I live near the bottom of a forest service road that is popular with the recreational sxs crew, Im constantly blown away by the quantity of these rigs and all the accessories they strap onto them. But like you said zero to little down, a semi-ok job, and willingly taking a 7~10 year loan. Then they all think they are a rally driver on day one.

Some of us actually write a check for them

Well, you are not as smart as you think you are when it comes to CC balances. I do, and have paid off mt CC balances every month for at least 18 or so years. Even when we buy something high priced, $5K OR MORE...
We have also, we buy all our meat and supplies for our food truck on our credit card for the cash back and the as soon as it is on the credit card I pay it off with the business account.

I agree, the gadgets really drive up the price. Same way with new trucks, a top of the line truck can almost double the price over the base model, same exact body and engine but all the gadgets double it's price. And people pay that which blows my mind!
Sad part of it is in most cases the base models are already wired and have the electronics for all those options.

Speaking of the rally driver thing......there's another reason I hate all these new 200 h.p. atv's. Our trails used to be beautiful around here. Nobody ever used to have anything bigger than a 500.
Now the trails are all deep ruts and bowling ball size rock because they have to constantly spin their tires and roost away all the fine gravel and sand.

Same up here in the winter. Weekend Warriors come up with their snowmobiles, High powered sleds, beat the hell out of the trails, then go home. I used to only ride during the week, after the groomers came through. P.S. I used to come up here to ride before I moved permanently, but we were NOT the WW type...

And don't get me wrong, I'm not the fun police, but go find a sand dune or something if you want to ride wide open.

Around here all the trails are used by kids, people walking, horseback.

I know a guy that I rode with twice and then said no more. He goes wide open, people giving him the finger, then gets back to his truck and it has flat tires and he can't figure out why. Not my idea of a fun day of riding.

Like you said, a time and a place for that kind of fun.
Some areas near Pittsburgh NH we used to see radar traps, and common to see people pulled over.
