Really. I have changed 5 or so sets. Just did some ona Durango last month.

I think he also would know the difference in fluids but just wanted to through it out incase he had not checked the fluid and just assumed.

Chris

Really..Never had one go bad and I run my trucks hard and put a ton of miles on them....I might have replaced a power steering line on my 91 somewhere in the late 90's if memory serves...That's how long it's been since I've had a failure.

I have an old Mercedes 240D sedan with 400+K miles on it and it has always leaked. I just park it where it doesn't matter. I took it into my Indy at 250K miles and he shrugged his shoulders about the leaks and said "see you in another quarter million miles". Not all leaks are to be concerned with.

About 18 months ago I had to have the intake manifold gaskets replaced on the 350 in my 94 Chevy truck...UOA showed glycol in the oil. Replacing them also cured the leak from the rear gasket on the manifold. I've also had to replace the gasket on the oil filter adapter. The quick connect fittings on the oil cooler lines also weep some but not enough to worry about.

heck the dealer told me that useage level was book spec :(

WHOSE book was he referring to? I recall about twenty years ago I was reading an automotive magazine, may have been Car&Driver, and one of the editors wrote a column about his experience with a new GM car. He felt it had an oil consumption issue, and the service department changed the oil and filter for him in order to properly monitor the oil useage. He wrote in his column that when he checked the oil level upon picking the car up, he found it had been overfilled by a quart and reported that was how GM preferred to deal with his issue, by overfilling the engine to make it appear that his car didn't have a problem with consumption.

I remember as a little boy my dad's old 63 and 66 Olds Super 88's leaving a stain in the carport...
Both of them did that seems like forever...
I did not know the mileage on those two old tanks but the back main seal leaked a drop or two on a regular basis...
He just kept driving them and keeping them serviced...
Never got to the point of a major repair as he kept the oil change at a 2K interval...

On my two current vehicles the rear end on my 03 F350 weeps...
Never developed a leak but is weeping...
I guess that is not too bad for a 10 year old vehicle with over 105K miles...
I just replaced valve cover gaskets on my 01 Buick...
Had over 170K miles at the time...
Not bad at all in my honest opinion...
But she does use oil...
1 quart every 4K miles...LOL

Our 98 ram 2500 v-10 was bullet proof for the first 10 years (120k). We stopped driving it so much when fuel prices went up and now every time i pull it out of the barn something is wrong with it. no leaks, then take the horses to the vet, come home to the whole underside of the bed covered in gear lube from the pinion seal going out. Pull it out a month later to find trans fluid on the ground. Go to pick up some hay and break line blows and have to make it 50 miles using just the trailer brakes and what little pressure i could pump up. Now the fuel pump screams at me from time to time and the tq. Converter goes from not wanting to engage to locking up when i sitting at a stop sign and stalling the truck out. I finally gave up and traded my half ton in on a new 2500 hemi for dd/towing duties. The old one can become my next off-road toy.
