Simple fix.

Thanks Chris...but I ask myself is it really worth doing the fix for a truck that gets used 1000 miles a year at the most?

Really..Never had one go bad and I run my trucks hard and put a ton of miles on them....I might have replaced a power steering line on my 91 somewhere in the late 90's if memory serves...That's how long it's been since I've had a failure.
WHOSE book was he referring to? I recall about twenty years ago I was reading an automotive magazine, may have been Car&Driver, and one of the editors wrote a column about his experience with a new GM car. He felt it had an oil consumption issue, and the service department changed the oil and filter for him in order to properly monitor the oil useage. He wrote in his column that when he checked the oil level upon picking the car up, he found it had been overfilled by a quart and reported that was how GM preferred to deal with his issue, by overfilling the engine to make it appear that his car didn't have a problem with consumption.
All GM service books as well as industry standard i dont think burning is considered "excessive" untill its like greater than 1qt every 600 miles or so. The saturn i drive is now at about a qt at that level but it has 225K on it. But even when it had 100k or so it would burn about a qt every 1200 miles or so. Father in law was a mechanic and owned his own shop. He was meticulous with maintence and did oil changes every 3k miles. He put normal miles on it. and in the eary to mid 00's that thing only had about 100k miles on it but burned about a qt every 2000 miles or so and he said it did from new. NOw that said i owned and still do but need to scrap it. a 1986 GMC s15 jimmy. it has 200k miles or so on it and did not use a drop of oil ???
i replaced both the gasket and the o-ring that seals the oil filter housing to the engine block. i'm not sure what material the new gasket is made. the gasket is hard, shiny, and very stiff so the obvious guess is plastic. seems like a funny place for a plastic gasket, but the engine no longer leaks a drop of oil. yay me
now i get to fix the exhaust stud i twisted off removing the y-pipe. boo me![]()

i don't know if the "600 miles per quart" idea is an industry standard exactly but it is one of the criteria used to decide when it is time to rebuild porsche air-cooled engines. All GM service books as well as industry standard i dont think burning is considered "excessive" untill its like greater than 1qt every 600 miles or so.
