Are engine oil leaks a symptom of age or mileage?

if we run to georgia.. or hit talahassee or miami.. I have to remember to toss a couple quarts of oil in the back.. to make sure we get there.

You may just want to try a different oil. I recall in one of my older vehicles that switching from Mobile1 to Quaker State solved an oil consumption issue.

i can tell yuo that at one time or another it's ahd everything in it from walmart to whatever jiffy store it decided to be low at.. .. both dino and synthetic.

I will say that the oe specified 5w30? oil runs thru faster so I went up a grade... brand don't seem to matter.

it will use 2.88/qt walmart oil just the same as 4$/qt shell servie station oil, or 6$/qt valvoline synthetic.

reven tried the hi milage oil in it... used that stuff just the same.

i've just resigned to live with it till it needs a repair that will 'total' out it's value vs cost ratio and then it will go away... for now.. it runs and is paid for... and as long as it runs.. I'll just think of it like my chainsaw... needs oil when I put gas in it. ......

I am callous to it because of fleet work. They all seem to use/leak oil. And oil is cheaper than downtime and repairs. It usually gets addressed when it becomes more than seepage.

We did have a major problem when switching to Mobil 1. Seals started to pour oil!

I guess my point is just keep running it.

the rear main seal on my 95 gmc k1500 has developed a major leak. at 131,000+ miles and 18 years i guess i can't complain too much. the part is something like $38 so that is no big deal. i just have to get'er done.

so i found some time to work on this issue and the rear main seal is bone dry. right now i have firm idea what exactly is leaking, but it looks like there might be a problem with the oil filter housing.

I took a look at my GMC when the weather warmed up and it appears it's a valve cover gasket issue.

i replaced both the gasket and the o-ring that seals the oil filter housing to the engine block. i'm not sure what material the new gasket is made. the gasket is hard, shiny, and very stiff so the obvious guess is plastic. seems like a funny place for a plastic gasket, but the engine no longer leaks a drop of oil. yay me

now i get to fix the exhaust stud i twisted off removing the y-pipe. boo me
