I now haul our trash to the local drop-site. They charge us only $1 for a 30-gal bag.

Ours is $10 minimum plus a weight fee of about $0.04 per pound.

Plus:

Refrigerator, Freezer or Air Conditioner $20.00
Car Tire $ 2.30
Car Tire w/rim $ 4.60
Truck Tire $ 9.20
Truck Tire w/rim $18.40

I wonder why we still have lots of roadside dumping? :)

We haul our own trash to the dumpster transfer station about 4 miles from our house. Bagged household garbage is "free" and of course it is "free" to put our recyclables in the appropriate containers. Other items too big or inappropriate for bags is charged by the pound - something like $5.80 for first 500 pounds and $5.80 for every 1000 pounds after or some such nonsense.

Appliances and "clean" metal are free to dispose of.

It has been a weekly chore, usually Saturday morning, to haul the trash for 25 years.

We share a dumpster 3 other neighbors (the neighbor who lives closest to the road has the dumpster on his land): $30/month

The neighbor has the dumpster has a business and storage units on his property so he gets the dumpster as a commercial account. So long as we avoid the Haz Mat, whatever fits, goes and the neighbor has a backhoe we use as a trash compactor.

Our rural area voted for recycleables (bluebin, greenbin) pick-up(cost is supposedly about $200 yearly, wrapped up in our property tax bill), but not general trash, so I haul that about 12 miles to the landfill, more often in summer, since trash doesn't 'keep' so well in the summer. Recycleables are picked up every week at the street.
Halton Region created this new landfill back in 1992, at the time they forecast a 20 year life before the dump would be 'full'. Since then, they have encouraged recycling and diversion programs so effectively that the most recent forecasts have the landfill lasting us until 2040.
Only my wife & I in the house, and even with kids & grandkids visiting often, we generate a green garbage bag full about every three weeks. Just went to the dump this morning with six bags... cost me $10, haven't been there since early November.

I haul our trash to the County Landfill. There is no charge if you have County plates, but there is a $80.00 annual tax that is listed on the property taxes yearly.

I went back to hauling my own several years ago. At that time it was $35- month, every other week for (2) 33 gallon bags.
Bottom line was poor customer service and continued rising "fees".

The biggest PITA was the "fuel surcharge" in addition to the regular fees. Even though we are a rural area, their routes are planned to maximize "profits" while reducing expenses. So then, why are they billing out "surcharges" on fuel that exceed what they are using? To use the term surcharge is misleading at best. And it is reasonable to say that it exceeds, even if only by a dollar otherwise, the surcharge would be more....

I can go to the transfer station 22 miles away and pay 3.50 per 33 gallon bag of garbage and no charge on recycling. Once a month I average about 25 bucks including fuel for the trip. If I have more than "10 bags" worth, they go by weight (their suggestion) to save me money. The couple of times I have neded that, it made a huge difference.

If someone came around with reasonable charges and didn't pull the "surcharge" thing, I might consider it again. But, they would have to be fairly competative with what I am able to do now. It stinks when "convinience" and "principles" clash like that.....

Our garbage service is EXCELLENT! 10 out of 10!

They take the trash to the dump at least once a week, usually on Mondays but other days are possible.

No difference if there is one bag or a dozen. They take used oil, old TVs, cardboard, metal, paper, cans, bottles, and even used fryer fat. Oh, yeah, trash! :D

The best part is that it cost me nothing! :cool2:

Course, I be the trash service!:laughing::laughing:

I think only one nearby house uses a garbage service. Our transfer station is near the only two grocery stores so all you have to do is drop off the trash before getting food. Easy peasey. The county sends out stickers every year to use the transfer station which is clean and efficient. Our property tax pays for the use of the transfer station.

I HATED the trash service I had to use in the city. Lazy SOBs. They would ALWAYS leave trash in my yard from other people. I even caught one of the SOB knocking on my garage door to annoy my dog. The service was expensive and not worth squat. SOOOOO, glad I don't have deal with that monopoly anymore.

What is funny is that we bought three huge garbage bins when we moved into the house. I use one by the "barn" for barn garbage while the other two are by the house. I am about to move the two at the house back to the barn or maybe grow potatoes in them. We never use the garbage cans at the house, we just put the garbage bags in the truck and I drop them off when I go to town. We have not used the garbage cans in years.:D:D:D

Dan

Our garbage/trash disposal fee is free. I deliver all un-burnables and plastics it to the scheduled dumpster 9 miles away 6 times a year. No tires, batteries, chemicals or building materials. County employees and a few citizens looking for ???whatever??? help you unload.

I didn't include my cost in the initial post, but I pay $16 per month for a wheeled bin that will hold about 3 to 4 full 33 gallon bags. It would be somewhat cheaper just to set out bags, but with all the coons and possums, etc. in this rural area it's worth it to me to have an enclosed container. My company has raised rates steadily by a buck per month about every other year, but with the increasing costs of diesel and labor rates I think a $6 a year increase is justified. They use very modern equipment and the trucks don't come cheap. The weird thing is, if you set out construction debris such as drywall scraps and/or shingles, lumber, etc. they refuse to pick those up.

Thats one thing that is great about a dumpster, if it fits (and its not hazmat), they will take it and we don't have to move cans up to the road. We had the dumpster filled to the brim with urine soaked floorboards (from the porch where the previous owner had litter boxes that weren't cleaned very often) and only had to handle them once (pulled them up and put them right into the dumpster).
