Twice a month an Eight mile trip to the free dump site. Sometimes another trip may be necessary if I'm building or cleaning up. This "Douglas County" is the last free dumpsite on the west coast. They plan on charging a fee possibly next year.

Our small city provides trash pick up every week for $15.66 per month.....that's one can per week. Service is very good. Year ago.....I picked up trash as a summer job.......I think I made minimum wage but it included an "all you can eat" clause. :D

Many dump sites are not only starting to charge fees, but they are also getting really picky about what they will accept. And they wonder why illegal dump sites are an ongoing problem. :confused2:

My new neighbor is piling up cut limbs and branches out by the county road. He asked me if I knew anybody to haul the stuff away or if I knew where the nearest dump was. I laughed and told him he was showing his 'city side.' I then asked if he had noticed that big gully right along the side of his property that was full of limbs and even an old round bale of hay. All of a sudden he smiled and said that it had never crossed his mind. I explained that brush was a good erosion stopper and I'd be happy to use my grapple to put the brush in his gully.:D

The contractor that picks up trash on our road is $48 a month!, Since I have to go by the shop in town every few days, I just take it and use the dumpster there. We burn everything we, mostly paper products and not much else. You'd be surprised at how much paper/cardboard and the like bulk up trash.

I'm very happy with my garbage pick up. We have Waste Management operating under a county contract. We have two pick ups per week. They have always picked up everything I put out, inluding rolls of old field fence, appliances and furniture. Since I'm over 65 my cost is $21 per quarter. If a holiday falls on a pick up day, I just miss that pick up.

We take recyclables to recycling center a couple of miles away. We take hazmat to a hazmat center a couple of miles away. The county only has one hazmat center, but several recycle centers. Waste Management operates the hazmat and recycle centers.

Yep, a good bit of the trash is paper products.

My wife's family still burns trash. Not sure what they do with bottles and cans, but if it burns, it burns. They have been using the same spot for decades but they don't let grandma burn trash anymore. A few years ago she was burning and decide to toss some gas on the fire. Grandma almost turned herself into a torch....

Dan

There sure is a large variation of how garbage is handled in this country! We dropped out "service" as the price went from $13/month to $23/month for weekly pickup of a 90 gallon tote. I always found this to be a pain to remember the night before to take the tote down the long driveway. Then I'd have to make 1-3 other trips to carry the recycling bins down. I now pay $4/visit to the landfill 5 miles away. I've saved over $1000 in the last few years doing it this way. I can pack my vehicle with 1-3months of our trash for $4. Obviously we go a little more often during the summer. We compost whatever can be composted. Recycling is free.

Before we moved back to town 10 years ago, I used a 55 gallon steel barrel sitting on 3 bricks to let air under it, to burn trash. I had drilled one half inch hole in the center bottom of the barrel to let rain drain out, 3 or 4 holes around the lower edge to let air in, and a screen on top to keep any sparks from flying out. And then what didn't burn, we put out once a week for the garbage pickup; just one individual driving a pickup and pulling a trailer with high sides. He was very reliable and charged $12 a month. His other job was driving a school bus.:D
