For what ever it may be worth, I take being called hard headed as a compliment!

Holy Smokes!! Maybe they should price out the same equipment as you use. Once they find out just how much it costs, maybe they will wake up and realize your price was fair.

That was my thoughts as well..

I've bought and sold quite a few used tractors and a BUNCH of used implements over the years. I build in a little "wiggle room" on selling prices there. I expect a bit of bargaining. However, when I price SERVICES, I give my best price up front. That's it. I'm not auctioning off my labor. Take it or leave it. Since my prices seem to be as low or LOWER than my competitors, most everyone takes my price and is happy with it. I've found most of the complainers wouldn't be happy if I offered to do the job for free.

I work for an electrical contractor and I use two vendors to buy my products. When I ask for a price I want your best price and then I make my purchase, no haggling. They both know my methods and they know their competition.

Recently I needed to buy a peice of test equipment so i sent out my RFP. I got my prices but hadn't made the purchase yet. One of the vendors came by the office and I believe he saw both quotes sitting on my desk. (I KNOW this because the specifications for the meter were not on the pile of papers and he was discussing the meter with my boss.) When I came in the office he asked if I had made the buy yet and I told him no. He said he had talked to his counter guy about the original quote and felt he could price that a little better, that I should already have received that e-mail. Sure enough there was a new price about $20 less that his competition.

I told my boss what I thought had gone down and that I wasn't going to play that game, you get one shot at my business and we move on. I don't have time to pit vendors against each other and I don't believe that builds a good relationship. I want to know what you can do for me right now.

I paid $20 extra dollars for the meter.

I am a truck owner/operator and I get the same nonsense on occasion.
Former customers will call me up and say they want me to do some work for them again - at the same price I was charging a year or two ago!

Depending on the customer they might have less to spend than they did a year or two ago. Justify your price & move forward or move on is all you can do. MikeD74T

I am with LarryD. I use a "tender" system when buying appliances. It really annoys the sales person when I ask for their best price but won't tell them what price I already have. I explain that I will not give their price to to the next store and will come back if their price is the best.

At one shop the sales assistant refused to play my game so I went to another assistant and got the price and bought it. I think the original "assistant" (I use the word loosely:rolleyes: ) was a littles p..... off:D

"Boy, you talk about hitting the nail on the head. In my 1 year and 3 months of running my shop full time, I've had 1 customer leave unhappy and not come back. Come to find out that this guy gives everyone a hard time regardless of price. He's just looking for you to come down so he feels like he got a special deal. Well I wouldn't come down so he thought I was ripping him off. Funny thing is now he goes down the street and gets an inferior product for more money....."

Isn't that funny. There is a breed of people who aren't satisfied with an arrangement until they've been able to negotiate it with the other party to their satisfaction. Even if it doesn't ultimately benefit them, they just don't feel like they've gotten a "deal" unless they've haggled or cussed or walked out or whatever in order to get something different.

I'm not a haggler. I look at something, ask the price, and if I want it and can buy it at that price.......I do. If I can't, I say "thank you" and go on.....just not meant to be.

But, I also work the same in other direction. I'll tell what I can do for a given cost (in time or money) and that's that.

I am assuming that you are refering to my previous post. I don't haggle and cuss, I simply give them a chance to give me a price and make a sale. The particular shop refered to, is known to negotiate (as are many appliance shops). Many of these stores have the goods marked at full retail price. If anyone is stupid enough to pay the marked price then the store is laughing.

The sales person was upset that I would not give another stores price so they could then take $5 off and make a sale. The item was a $1500 fridge. It is not fair to the other store that has given a good price to be beaten by a another that would only give a fair price if required to get a sale.

"Funny thing is now he goes down the street and gets an inferior product for more money....."

I also only do this when I have decided on the make and model so all are pricing the same thing.

"There is a breed of people who aren't satisfied with an arrangement until they've been able to negotiate it with the other party to their satisfaction."

You have also got it right in that it is a negotiation and neither side is happy unless they've been able to negotiate it with the other party to their satisfaction. The retailer must also be happy with the price or would not have sold the goods.

I am responding to your post as well as the world in general. Don't think there's anything personal here at all, okay. Your shop or electronics or whatever are like no other customer/buyer relationship on Earth.

So, you willingly pay more for the same or less depending upon the negotiating accumen of the seller? I want you for a customer. I have wonderful deals for you.....yeah.

Oh, I got it right here, eh? Thanks for letting me know since up until now I had no idea apart from what I read on the internet. You are a business Jesus......thanks for coming along.

Here's the funny part, as I so clearly stated earlier, I'm not a negotiator. I do as I say and expect to be paid upon those statements....if I lose I learn and if I bank I thank the Lord.
