Artillian Grapple

Yep, Ash doesn't last long dead. I survey my timber constantly looking for trees showing signs of terminal disease. Sometimes I get behind and burn some pretty punky wood. But that's part of it..... :)

Punky wood burns too!

Yes it does but it burns cold. I just mix it in with Oak and Hickory.
My problem is we have way to much dead at one time to burn it all any more.
So I am just letting it drop where it is unless it falls on a trail or is close to the house. We have about ten that I have to get away from the house and that will go to the burn pile, why I asked about the grapple in the first place.

If you are looking for a lightwieght grapple check out the Single lid Wicked grapple(274lbs). Everything Attachments Compact Wicked Root Grapple 50" If you want a grapple with a larger opening or one that is heavier duty check this one out. Single Lid Root GrappleIf you want a 2 lid grapple check this one out.Everything Attachments Wicked Root Grapple for Compact Tractors If you buy a dedicated grapple and forks you will have about the same money as what you will in an artillian that you have to assemble when you need it.

If you want a set of pallet forks here are a couple.

42" Pallet Fork Attachment with 2" Trailer Receiver Hitch for John Deere Loader | eBay

These are cheap but they don't have a back rest.

Titan 42" John Deere Pallet Fork Attachment 200 300 400 500 Loaders | eBay

These have a back rest but I would add some expanded metal to the back to protect the tractor more.

Even though the Emerald Ash borer killed those trees they will still make some good firewood.

Thanks for all the links. It helps. That EA grapple looks nice to.

Yes it burns cold but still is warmer than not having a fire. :D

I burn it as well and mix it in.

I have several big hickory trees close to the house that need to go. After splitting a load of hickory from another source those trees look a whole lot better! Hickory splits terrible.

Yes it does but it burns good. The Hickory we have is mostly Shagbark hickory. Pretty stringy stuff going through the spliter but a good cooker.
Years ago when we heated the house only with the wood burning stove I would sort the wood by how hot it would burn. On days when it was 30 or above it was good to have some punk wood or cottonwood that did not burn hot in the stove. You could have a good size stack in the stove and not drive yourself out of the house from overheat. :)

You can usually spot a wood stove user by the open windows. :)

Back when my mom was alive I'd come home the caregiver would have all the doors wide open and the wood stove full blast. She never did seem to get the idea she could turn it down. And it was one of the good ones that would turn all the way down. That and not dumping grease down the drain was a concept she couldn't grasp either.
