WRONG!!! I worked extensively with absestos in the military and have seen the damage it can cause. You are correct that damage can only take place if the fibers are inhaled, but any fibers that are inhaled continue to cause damage for the rest of your life! This is far different from cigarette smoke, which the cilia in your airways can expel to some extent. Asbestos fibers, especially the chrysotile used so commonly in insulation applications, will generate scar tissue till the day you draw your last breath! Avoid even short term exposure to the stuff!

That said, if the fibers don't go airborne they can't hurt you. Removal of asbesto insulation is a sure fire way of being exposed. Covered, it can't hurt you. Airborne, it can and will!
