/ TRACTOR SLUNG PTO SHAFT!!! - PICS. #41
The shaft and bore have to be smooth for the Shear Pin to work.
The Grade 8, Grade 5 designations are for Tensile (pulling strength) NOT Shear strength. I don't know if there is a difference. What is RC? Remote Clutch?
RC is usually "Rotary Cutter" and graded bolt tensile strength is directly related to shear strength as well. There are standards for that stuff but I do not have them handy.

Not really. They just need to get rid of that smooth design, put a simple 6 splined shaft on the input of the gearbox and that alone opens a lot of options of PTO shafts, either clutch type or shear bolt type just like I showed on post #4, which is much much easier to use and not an hassle to use at all.

True but not many people want to tear into a perfectly good gearbox to replace a fairly expensive input shaft.

I meant the implement manufacturers, not the actual owners.

What is worse than having to replace a shear bolt once in a while? Having to repair the damage when a clutch doesn't slip.

Number one...you should know better..how long you been around ptos?..are you a teenager? Lesson learned..idle down when engaging any PTO in..

I recently did some thorough maintenance on my woods BB60 mower. I noticed there was no retainer clip in the end of the shaft to keep the pto shaft from coming off in the event of a sheared pin. Looking closely there appeared to have never been one mounted in the groove. Having had one come apart years ago when I still young and had all 9 of my lives, the sight frightened me considerably. After several fruitless attempts to find one locally, i contacted the Woods dealer and had some mailed to me. After seeing these photos, i will routinely check to be sure that clup is there. Thanks for rhe reminder.

I think a lot of people treat the slip clutches like a SET-IT-AND -FORGET-IT part, which it is not. Watch some videos or read the instruction book. They require regular checking and adjustment. Be safe everyone.

The clutch increases the cost of the implement. My Countryline from Tractor Supply didn't have a clutch. It used a sheer bolt but even it came with a clip in front of the U-joint half. I remember having a hard time getting to it. After the first use and a bag full of bolts, I bought the clutch. It's worth the $100 not to be out in the field replacing sheer bolts all day.

The clutches are available for splined or smooth shaft. I needed smooth so that's what I got. ;)
