I think I'm starting to get the point of this diet:

Eat protein.

Eliminate carbs.

I think this diet would work for me, but only because I would be starving. I would have no problem eating lots fo meat, but where would I get it?

I'm on the road by 5am and grab some food somewhere along the way. I don't think McDonalds or the gas station have zero-carb meal options.

Lunch time, same problem, I never know where I'll be or when I'm going to eat lunch. So, as I would not have much luck finding low-carb options, my caloric intake would drop dramatically. Hence, my original comment about starving.

Good news is, I only need to starve off about 20 lbs.

( On quiting Cigs, cold turkey is the only way you can quit. )

Hi Dick!

I respectfully disagree.

I smoked for over 30 years, and as many others have mentioned, I tried quitting many times with no success.

But even though I was still enjoying smoking (more or less /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif), I knew I had to quit for not only my sake, but my family's. Hey, I wanted to see my grandchildren! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

So one Saturday back in '01 I was driving home from getting a haircut and I decided to stop at a drug store to read one of the "patch" boxes to find out how the program worked. I ended up buying it, the Nicoderm CQ program, and I went home and put the patch on.

That was the last day I ever had a cigarette. Does that mean I did it cold turkey? I don't think so. I absolutely know that I couldn't have done it without the patch.

( I'm ready to try about anything that will "work" to break this habit,I can handle the weight gain and the other "side affects" of quiting,I don't know if my family can "handle" me.
)

Mike,

I found the patch program to be very effective. In fact, I found it to be almost too easy. I never had any real bad side effects, other than I did gain some weight. To keep this on topic, I'm using the South Beach diet to lose weight! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I'm convinced that the only way for anyone to quit smoking, whether cold turkey or with some type of program, is if the person is truly ready to quit. It's easy to say "I know I shouldn't smoke", but unless you truly mean it, you won't be able to do it.

If you are ready to quit, I highly recommend the Nicoderm CQ program. It worked for me. And my family had no complaints about me while I was quitting because 1) I wasn't terrible to live with, and 2) they were VERY happy about what I was doing.

If you want anymore information about my experience, feel free to send me a private message. I've been "smokeless" since January 13, 2001, and it's GREAT! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Mr. Wurm,

It is tough to get on any wieght loss diet including Atkins.

Does McDs have omletes/eggs for breakfast? If so that is OK with Atkins. Slim Jims have some carbs but not alot. Pork Rinds are good pig out food. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Hard boiled eggs are a go as well.
Can/Woud you eat one of the pink pickled eggs in the gas
station?

What I have had to do is change what I eat which requires one
to break ones habits of where you eat. Sometimes. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I eat alot of the Carb Solutions energy bars. The Atikins bars
are good as well. I have been buying chuck meat, cutting it up
and cooking a couple of pounds at a time. I keep it in the
fridge to use as a dinner or a snack.

Wendy's has some really good salads with meat.

Once you change the habit of what you eat its really not that
hard. But it takes awhile to figure out what you can and cannot
eat.

Later,
Dan

( Sort of as a side comment those Tour DeFrance cyclists sure don't follow Dr. Atkins diet and they are probably some of the people with the least fat ratio of any athletes going. )

That's because they are BURNING up calories like crazy, and need the carbs to keep gas in the tank. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Gordon,How did you give up the the cigs.? I've been a smoker for 35 years and I know I'm pushin it.I've tried to quit "cold turkey" and I just can't do it.The cravings are just more than I can handle...it takes an addict to understand what the body and the mind endure from Nicotine withdrawal...

You are not ready to quit. You will not quit until you have the will power to quit. Period.
Patches, gum and other crap are crutches. Don't waste your money. I wish I had thought to market crap like that... I'd be a very wealthy man. I smoked for over twenty years and at 12:30 p.m. on 02/28/1999, I quit. I was ready to quit and had the will power to quit. (I was tired of the hacking, coughing and sinus problems.) I had headaches and no energy for two days after quitting... that was all. It was the easiest habit I ever quit. Well, other than bowling and golf and tournament bass fishing and high-power rifle shooting and model building.
As far as weight gain, that's horsecrap. You'll only gain weight if you substitute food for cigs.

What a lot of people don't know, is what Dr. Atkins did was bring back the way people ate over a hundred years ago. They ate mostly meat, and they weren't fat. Then around 1890, Coke came out, and the rule is 20 years after sugar use goes way up, heart attacks start. So around 1910 they started. Before 1900 there was very few, but since then they have just kept going up, and so did the suger, (carbs) use. It has worked the same way in other countrys, where they use little or no sugar no heart attacks, when us or some other country got them to using it, they started to have the old heart problems just like us. Of course someone will probably say, they didn't live as long as we do. Which of course is true, but we have a better way of life in a lot of ways than they did. Like real heated houses and cooled. Better medicines, and hospitals. But we are dieing more and more from our hearts, and they didn't. Look it up, it is a fact.

I used to be like that. Well, maybe not as fast, but I rode 400-600 miles per week and thought nothing of racing up Mt Palomar in San Diego County for a morning's fun. Had a 30 inch waist and 27 inch thighs. Could max out the leg press machine with one leg.

But I had no life back then. Somehow cycling doesn't seem so important anymore. Wife, dogs, sheep, tending the land. These things bring joy.

It's funny how life changes...
