Hi Guys. I hope this is OK to post this here . I have no clue about these types of things . But I see a lot of 4wd type of rigs & need some help in figuring out what I may want.

First off I,m not planning on buying one. But I have a mid 80,s 8000 lb lift capacity Hyster Deisel forklift I,ve been trying to sell with very little luck . So My thoughts are advertising it on Craigslist in the barter section as wanting to trade for a 4 wheeler with maybe some type of dump bed on it .

I Dont need anything fast or fancy & would prefer to just use regular gas in it without mixing oil in it. Like I said , I know nothing about these so sorry if it sounds stupid .

The FL is valued around 5 to 8 grand as far as I,ve seen around this area allthough I dont have that in it as I took it in trade & I no longer have a need for it , but a 4 wheeler could be very usefull . I just dont know what to say I want to trade for if that makes any sense . Just something I could use around the property more then the FL .

4 wd & a dumpbed would be a plus but wouldnt be a that big of a deal one way or the other .

I,d apreciate any input as to what I should be looking to trade for . As long as it has no Mechanical issues I wouldn,t care if it was WELL used . I know these are very Pricey so I dont want to ask for to much. just a fair & equall trade. Thanks . Bob

First, it is not ATV that you are saying you want to get. According to your description - 4WD, Gas Engine, Dump Bed - what you want is a RUV or UTV. Call Kawasaki, Yamaha, ArtiCat, Honda, John Deere, Kubota, etc. dealers near you and tell them what you want. And ask what's the exact model name that might be for each mfg. Then, look up Craigslist or whatever classified ads for that exact name.

Here are some examples:
Kawasaki makes various size "Mules" (400 cc to 950 cc engine). Their Teryx might be little too much for what you are looking for, but check it out anyway.
Yamaha calls it Rhino, etc.

Thanks for the info chazzy . Like I said I dont know much about these & to further more prove My point, I have no clue what some of the things Mean . I was assumming ATV was all terain vehicle as Thats what the folks around here calls there Farm 4 wheelers .

I just thought I could get an idea here as far as what would be Comparable for the price range used. I dont want to Buy one , Just trade something I dont need for something I can. thanks again. Bob

ATVs have handlebars, while UTVs (also called RUVs or ROVs) have steering wheels. The U stands for Utillity...

Thanks KentT , Sorry I,m just way behind the times .

Could someone at least give Me a price range for a decent Used UTV . I just am looking for what I should be asking for in trade. Granted some of You pay more for these types of things then new cars .

Just around here they dont post pics So I have no clue what they are. I just dont want to trade something thats worth 5 or 8 grand for something thats worth far less & wont be of any use , Nor do I want to offend someone by asking to trade for something thats worth more then what I have to trade.

Thanks again for any input . Bob

New can cost $9-15k. They seat 2-3-4-6. Decent used ones like you're talking about-Kawasaki Mule, John Deere Gator, Polaris Ranger, etc-usually run in the $5-9k price range.

It really depends on what you want to use it for. If you want to haul 1000 lbs and run hydro attachments, you need on of the beasts like an RTV900/RTV1100. A messing around machine that will do general work, a Mule, Ranger etc would work really well. If you are using to peruse the property and carry 400lbs around or so and don't need a ton of towing abillity, an RTV500 would be the ticket..8000-8500 new, have heard of them for much less. Kubota has 0% financing.

Thanks Guys . Thats the kind of info I,m looking for. as far as My needs. I have 2 , around 30 HP tractors with loaders & a smaller tractor I,m building a carryall for the rear for the wife to haul Her garden supplys , Which I could also sell if I had something to replace it with .

So I need no more then a 2 seater. a Dump bed would be nice , But I,m not needing to carry anything heavy in it . It would be more for the wife then anything . 4 WD would also be nice so We can go around the property when its to muddy or snow on the ground. No need for a cab. Or fancy accesories like a winch or whatever .

My Problem is I,m just trying to be realistic on Value of what I have , No matter what its suposedlly worth , I dont even have a clue of what My FL sold for new nor does it matter . But Others ask far more then what stuff is worth , Or go off of new price . Thats why I prefer to trade .

Anyway Thanks to all. Like I had said I dont need one really & wouldn,t buy one . but it could be handier then the FL if I can get the right deal . Hope that makes sense. Thanks again. Bob

Cragslist...People are looking for all kinds of stuff there. Look it up and see what people are asking...Haven't seen anything about forklifts on this site.

Good Luck.

I often wonder if a humble 4WD suzuki wouldnt do most of the stuff you guys want, for a heck of a lot less than you pay for a 'RTV'. A suzi could be had for as little as $500. Most of them are airconditioned and heated too. There are soft tops, hardtops (like mine) and tray backs. Heck, for $500 you could get one and cut up the body to suit yourself. They are very tough little critters and dirt cheap to maintain. If you throw on a set of fat F100 rims and tyres they will go almost anywhere. I've seen them in water up to the windscreen. They are so light its pretty hard to bog them. I dont know how they would perform in snow but I guess that depends a lot on the rubber. Low range is reasonably low so they can handle most slopes.

Mine launches and retrieves the boat, and is the general hack vehicle for fun around the shack. The soft top model looks cool but I'm happy with the hard top. (Its warm and dry.) They are all manual trans so that can be a problem for the ladies.

I agree alchemysa , Great pics BTW thanks . I dont really need anything fancy , with the 3 tractors I have now & I have a 4wd Jimmy I use to drive around the property I,m pretty well covered .

I just thought if I could trade the forklift for something more usefull , But now I,m thinking about a dump trailer instead . There just dont seem to be any used UTV,s around here . lots of the atvs But those dont really intrest me.

Thanks for the link NSBound . Thats a fine looking rig , but far more then I need & probablly very pricey. :eek:

Thanks for the replys though. Bob

Bob, $5k-$8k is a pretty broad range. I think you need to nail down what you are willing to take for your Hyster a little closer than that. When you talk about UTVs, it can mean everything from an electric golf cart for $1k-$2k on up to a Bobcat Toolcat for $30k. A well known brand like Kawasaki, Kubota, Yahama, and John Deere are going to maintain their value longer than say an EZ-Go, or another lesser known brand. Like many other things, you have to find something and then do your homework. You sure don't want to trade a $8k Hyster for a $1.5k golf cart.

I think you could find a JD Gator, Kawasaki Mule, or Kubota RTV 900 that might fit your needs. If you stay with one of these, you can find tons of aftermarket products to dress them any way you want. For example, our 2004 Kawasaki Mule has 500 hours. It has an addon windshield, roof, and hydraulic dump bed. The cost of the Mule new was about $9,500. It's probably worth around $6k today because it's in great shape. You'd expect a 5-yr old RTV 900 to be in the same price range, maybe $7k since they sell for a little more.

Why don't you look around and see what you can find and run it by this forum. You'll get plenty of advice on specific models of UTV. My advice would be to try and sell your Hyster outright. Trying to find somebody who has just the UTV you want and needs a Hyster would challenge anyone in any market.:)

RUV=Recreational Utility Vehicle
UTV=Utility Vehicle
MUV=Multiple Use Vehicle

pretty much all the same thing!! :):):)
