ATV Trail

Don't you just hate those people who make laws but have no touch of reality. Have you ever seen a 14 year old boy on a 90cc atv? Talk about dangerous. I would rather my son ride a machine that is a little bigger than have him all scrunched up on a toy. Now I went off the deep end.. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Gotta have the chaps. Crazy to use a saw without them. I never used to use a pair until I had a lenghtly discussion with some of my wife's coworkers in the National Forest Service. I wear them all the time now. Cheap insurance.

Well, this may seem a bit off track, but consider getting him a mountain bike instead of an ATV. Bicycles are much healthier to use and modern bikes with full suspension (good quality bikes, not wally world specials) can go just about anywhere.

Attached is a pic of my 11 year old son on a steep trail in Colorado.

Trails can be just singletrack paths, not wide roads. And bikes are cheaper to buy and maintain, easier to transport, not to mention quieter and more environmentally friendly.

bmac,

I have ridden 3 wheelers, 4 wheelers, motorcycles, etc. for over 20 years. A few thoughts:

As kids, we always made our own trails through the woods. It was an adventure and something we enjoyed. Usually took and ax and machette with us for the day. I suppose it was a good sense of accomplishment and a great way to spend time with the friends.

Husquavarna makes a brush cutter very similar to a weed eater except there is a blade in place of a string. It's easier to work with because you aren't bending down constantly and the blade is actually away from your limbs. Just need to be aware of the direction of blade spin and make sure it always kicks away from you and not toward you.....

For younger riders, I believe wider trails are more dangerous than narrow trails. The wider trails actually promote speed whereas the narrow trails limit that greatly. If you are weaving through the woods on a narrow trail, there isn't enough room to pick up the speed.

Although I have ridden down logging roads cleared by dozer, I think an atv trail holds up much better if the ground is undisturbed by large equipment. The shallow root systems in place seem to make for a more durable trail. Once that shallow root system is removed, it's easier to create the ruts.

You will be fine either way you decide to go. Your kids will love riding the atv's.

Good point Jim. I've worn chaps for years without incident....then it happened. I touched my thigh with the saw. If I had not had the chaps on I would have been seriously cut up. I always put on the safety gear when using the saw. Sometimes I hesitate but then I suit up before I start the saw. I know it is the wisest thing to do.

I had a bicycle as a kid and I also had a couple of 3 wheelers growing up. Both have their uses. I think a kid having a motorized vehicle teaches some responsibility. My dad taught us how to check and change the oil and be responsible riders. Every day during the summer was an adventure.

Exactly! Seen the average kid these days? A little exercise is a good thing, a lot is even better.

There's plenty of maintenance lessons that can be taught on bicycles. Need to change the oil? Change the fork oil!
