Backhoe blowing hoses

I did fix up the gauge today to fit before the valves on the supply line. ~2250 to 2500 psi is the max reading I could get out of it before making what may have been a bypassing noise.

While extending any cylinder it was reading about 1000 psi and while drawing the cylinders inward, it read about 2250 psi.

The more I fool with this, the more I believe its just a matter of worn hoses not handling a good workout.

What are the QDs?

QD's are Quick Disconnect fittings for use on attachments that allow quick hook up. They just snap together.

The pressure you read will depend on the load applied to the cyl. Just raising and lowering a cyl may not generate a lot of pressure. However, if you fully extend the cyl and the relief activated, then you will read the max pressure that the cyl can generate. Same when you retract all the way and the relief activates.

Were you digging into something tough when you read the pressure? If you can not generate the set relief pressure when the cyl is bottomed out, then the cyl needs work.

If your BH valve has work port reliefs, they may need to be checked.

I wouldn't worry about it. Digging with a backhoe results in extreme pressure fluctuations which puts extreme stress in hoses. With every fluctuation, the hoses move, expand and contract. Add in that you only have one wire hose that is old and it's no wonder these hoses are popping like pimples before prom night.

Do I see Gates hose ends (in arm of backhoe) crimped to another brand of hose (the ones pictured with the control valve).....or am I daydreaming..:confused2:

Funny how the safety police here are so worried about everything else but mis-matching hose and crimps is ok.

I did some digging with it this evening while watching the gauge. It would max out at just under 2500 psi before stalling or bypassing. Certain hoe movements like curling the arm in under digging force would make a real fast ticking noise...not a good word for the sound but to me it was likely bypassing pressure. When doing this the gauge would dance pretty good.
