Backhoe Tree Root Cutter Winter Project

Personally I'd stick with the original design you had - the current iteration looks much less workable in terms of it's attachment method.

Ok I'm out of the lurking mode to add my 2 cents. I recently attempted similar project using a 3/8 x 4" x 20 inch piece of steel sharpened on one edge. I drilled 3 holes on outside edge of hoe bucket to mount cutter. Unfortunatley the first time I used it the cutter bent badly. Probably had too much length sticking out and too thin metal. Now I have purchased a plow share from Tractor Supply hoping since it is thicker and probably heat treated it will work. Will have to wait to try it until get new cylinder for hoe that I bent trying to break up huge stump. - (Simple abuse not related to cutter) Best luck with project.

Seems the ones I've seen on trackhoes are rigid and attach to dipper stick. Bucket is curled in to expose ripper tooth. Doesn't get in the way of digging and no removal of bucket. Try a search on stump ripper or splitter or similar.

Thanks, I will search that. Never seen a rigid model but that makes sense. Had a suggestion that I mount one on my dipperstick in the same position as to where a thumb is mounted. Got thinking about that scenerio & said "hey, maybe". Your thoughts ?????

Check out the Land Pride Backhoe site, they have show a tree root/frost ripper tooth that mounts onto the back of the bucket. Might be another way of solving the problem.

GG,
thanks for the welcome. I've looked at the odd post over here when it comes up in a google search. I "resisted" joining as I already spend enough time on the Machine Builders Forum as it is /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

The LandPride operator and parts manuals are available on their site in pdf. They have pretty much all the info you'd need to make one up. I used them as one reference for the hoe I designed and built this year.

The Fabco reference in the tooth blade article reminded me of them. They (and others) sell "scarifier" teeth and tips, that are made to be used this way. There was a guy selling stuff on ebay at good prices. Someone I know (in the US) bought his teeth from them. Fabco Scarifier Teeth

The teeth I used on my hoe came from Hensley, who also make shanks.

Good info, I've got it on the list to make one up for mine, but there's a few things in the pipe before it.

FWIW. Andrew

I went to the LandPride Site but unfortunately couldn't find the Tooth then got busy & put it on the back burner. I e-mailed Ag-Way in Ontario & gave him my specs, he replied saying they could possibly supply me with one but to call them. You know anything about them & where's Merrickville ?? Machine Builders Forum, hmmm, haven't spent any time there. Have you bought Landpride Items here in Canada ??

It's in their manuals, backhoe section, parts (might be in the operators one too). Landpride Parts Manual (pdf) . It's right at the back, page 46. The picture I pasted in above is from their backhoe brochure. I've never bought anything from Landpride, just looked at their info, and I think perhaps some of their hoes (they're marketed under a number of names in various OEM deals I think).

Merrickville, is about 60km south of Ottawa.

The Machine Builders Net forum has been a lot of fun and is full of great information. It seems to have attracted a remarkable cadre of people who love to build things, and help others do it to. Be warned though ... it's habit forming /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif !

cheers, Andrew

Behind the bucket, tooth would just follow in it's path. At thumb position, I trhink it would be awkward at best to rip with due to bucket hitting bottom Maybe if it was long enough it would work in front, but that increases leverage to break it off or damage dipper. Good luck.
