I don't like "self checkouts". There is usually one item that refuses to be scanned. The stores that have them should give a discount for using them. What's next? Maybe have their customers stock the shelves for them while browsing the isles or maybe attach a dust mop to the shopping carts?

Well said.....
That is precisely why I do not use self checkouts. For me it has nothing to do with using an automatic payment or anything like that. It has everything to do with the retailer not giving me a discount for scanning my own items that I am purchasing. Give me something off to make up for the labor they aren't paying and I would do it. Until then I will get someone to ring me out.

It reads like some of you are approaching this all wrong. Waiting 15 minutes for a machine to be fixed?! Why wouldn't you just walk to a different machine

The thinking that you are a store employee because you scan and bag your items is based on old views and/or entitlement. Change is hard, I get it.

The savings a company gets form reducing employee cashier costs results in lower costs elsewhere, which means, you are in effect getting paid to scan and bag your own stuff. In other words, if someone hires 5 cashiers and another same company hires 1 with 5 automatic stations, the latter will likely have better prices from the reduced labor (which is the most expensive) costs which saves you money.

Then I am sure you agree the retailer has a right/duty to charge you more for using a credit card.

You were doing so good. Then I read the last paragraph. I consider myself naive and prove it here daily. But I ain't buyin none of that last paragraph. :)

"Lowe's cuts store jobs by thousands as it seeks to outsource workers
Hawaii News Now | Thu Aug 01, 2019 20:28 UTC

The Wall Street Journal reported that thousands of employees were told this week that their jobs were eliminated, which the company confirmed."

:mad::thumbdown:

This is a non issue, just look at the jobs they are outsourcing. They need skilled sales people on the floor and they dont need to waste time assembling or cleaning.

With the high costs of minimum wages and other items like insurance you have to really scratch your head on how any company survives now in the US. Legislate them out of business or to bankruptcy is the new theme in America.

I dont blame any company one bit and really would not be surprised if I lost my job to outsourcing this year or next.....

Companies are not in business to create jobs. For many years, my job was to improve productivity. Getting more done with fewer people, as well as increasing quality by not being dependent on people who make mistakes.

The only reason automated self-checkouts grow in use is to reduce costs and better service customers. If it means a dozen low paying jobs are lost, it sucks to be in their shoes.

I like using the cashier lines except when there are two or three customers with a cart full of stuff. Fortunately, most people are lazy and will not self-checkout when buying a lot of stuff. If the cashier line looks busy, I use the self-checkout.

You have a choice. Do what works for you. If you are a socialist....ALWAYS use the cashier line....many of us capitalists will be grateful.

First part, true. Second part, false

So my checkout preference labels me as a socialist?
That has to be the most ignorant comment I have read anywhere this week.
This place is starting to make Facebook seem like a Mensa convention.

I took a breath and skipped that part. :)
