Bar/Turfs - Why are they so unpopular?

I had them on a B2400. No good there because they were shorter than the standard tires and you lost all ground clearance. If you can get them in the same height as your regular tires they would be allright.

They look specialized. Maybe if you had to work around a nursery for instance. Well drained soil, no grass, you need a little extra traction but you can't have the agricultural tires ripping up the ground around your trees/plants. Just thinking out loud.

Seems that i've heard them called rice patty tires.

I have these tires on a B2620. If you use the MMM, these tires work very well. The fronts have a rounded corner profile which helps prevent the tire marks that result from the wheel camber and tight turn radius of the B2x20 tractors. The lower profile helps improve stability when mowing on slopes and the increased width of the rears improves weight distribution on the lawn.

This past winter I was also impressed with traction when using the front blade or snowblower.

I wouldn't think those would wear very well unless they spent their entire lives on dirt/turf...Would think any pavement would eat them up pretty good...Having never had them, it's just an observation.

You are referring to R-2 "Rice and Cane" tires.

You lose an inch of radius compared to the turfs.
Isn't that about the same as R-4s?

I would infer that this loss in radius would slightly improve the center of gravity.

On B2920 options are 11.2-16 R1 AG
33x12.5-15 Turf, 31x15.5-15 Bar Turf
12x16.5 R4

Bar turfs are two inches lower and 3 inches wider, I had these on B1750 many
years ago and they were fantastic, great on grass and great in snow, had R4's
on L3010 and they were hards as rocks, poor traction in snow and had to keep
off the grass. If I am able to get a new B2920 this year it will have the Bar Turfs.

I have had just the opposite experience with R4's. I have found they don't do anything great , but they do everything well. They leave almost zero marks on the grass, and I just finished completing a logging road around the pasture (lots of stump pulling and moving around in the woods ) no issues and never felt uneasy even on steep wooded and even wet slope while putting road in. The additional ply's were a plus rolling over roots etc when clearing woods for road. Have not tried them in snow yet. Most likely will be using chains.

I got 1 set of turfs and 1 set of ags when I bought my BX2200. When I do ground engagement work, the turfs spin. When I mow with the ags, they do no more damage to the lawn than the turfs do. The ags now stay on all the time and the turfs sit in the crawlspace under the house.
