Reading some of the post from those who live in suburan areas having to get building permits made me glad I live in a rural county. I built my house and barn when and where I wanted to. The only one I had to ask for permission was my banker. Once he gave me the go ahead I brought in a crew and went to work.

Ditto. And, in our case no banker involved and we built our own. Just can't imagine having to ask some bureaucrat for permission to do something on my own land and then having to pay for it as well. As the late John Denver once sang, "Thank God I'm a country boy."

Same here, I live in a unincorporated part of the county and can do whatever I please, no permits required.

This is a great thread and very informative as I'm in the planning stages here in North Alabama for a 40 x 65 building.

"Unincorporated" being the key word there. My brother has been hassled beyond measure by the City of Huntsville.
