Barn Cat?

Man, these threads sure take on a "life of their own". Guy just wanted to know if it would be cool to get a barn kitty!

Yeah, we kinda lost our heads for a moment. It won't happen twice.

You are correct. I will never understand or accept any reasons why someone won't vaccinate their animals against rabies. If they can't afford it, they shouldn't own them. Its just that simple.

As a kid on a dairy farm we had cats. They all moved in. They were given a tin of milk at every milking. They came for it. Some we tamed as kids. None of them got any other food from us. None of them got any medical care or vaccinations. We simply could not afford it. We could have shot them all, poisoned them. But we left them alone to do as best as they could. At least the barn didn't freeze with the cows in it during the winter.
My take is something is better than nothing.
Some years ago I kept a couple outside cats alive through the winter on raw eggs- we had plenty with our chickens, but krunchies and canned food was too much for the budget.
Some people abuse animals, but generally when animals don't get all we think they should- the answer is generally simple. Anybody providing shelter and/or food to strays has their heart in the right place.

Right now I've got 3 stays I can't touch walking scared through the kitchen from their cat door. It is 6F outside. I've got a couple of others outside I'd like to see come in- but they chase each other out. There are krunchies there. Still cold.

Just as my Dad said, wrestle with a pig and all you get is muddy and the pig likes it. :D

Guilty.....

My grandmother's family raised hogs...she used to tell us about how she and her brothers wrestled hogs down in the snow and cut their throats...and letting them run around (squealing) until they bled out...:D

I never said their heart isn't in the right place. It genuinely is. However, they are terribly misguided. Its been proven time and again that un-vaccinated cats spread disease, and feral cats devastate wildlife. And traps and poisons work better than cats at targeting rodents.

When we first got established here I raised a couple of hogs (both were named "BB"...short for BBQ :D)

A neighbor took me under his wing and taught me all about raising hogs...What I remember most about the first one we "processed" is...On a freezing cold predawn morning having to haul 5 gallon buckets of water up the hill from the river to fill a 55 gal drum supported over a fire box for scalding...no way I could do that these days...

Poison kills many different species not just the target species, including cats, dogs or owls who find a dieing or dead critter an easy meal. Yes if you have a bunch of dead mice laying around they are snacks for a dog, cat, skunk or whatever. I raised mice and sold them as a kid so know what those critters can take and now many species feed on them. I supplied about 50 mice a month to a couple pet stores, usually for snake food from about 8 years old till maybe 13. We raised pigeons, hunted, fished year around as well as hand dug large gardens all for food. I grew up POOR while rescuing a kitten was something we could & did do taking it to the vet was not in the budget as taking us KIDS to doc was not in budget (real easy to figure out when there is 0 money!) We kept a cat or two around with only rare small bag of food 2 or 3 lbs lasted a month, the cats ate mainly from mice/birds they caught. Some of the happiest animals we ever had were ones that would go hunting in fields or woods with us. They got the spoils of a good hunting trip or fishing trip (innards of the soon to be dinner for mom and my brother.)

People having this holier than though attitude is not something I cotton to. Lots of people say they were poor yet they had/have phones, TVs, Cars, electric & heat and parents with jobs earning money for those luxuries. I grew up with 3rd hand clothing hand-me downs from my brothers who got it from others.

Again just because you say un vaccinated cats spread disease it is less likely than Vets and Vaccine companies want you to believe. If the cats are healthy, fit and are able to feed themselves without eating poisoned dead mice they live long, healthy and happy lives.

I'm sorry you had a poor childhood. That doesn't mean skipping vaccines is a good idea. It really comes down to this - If you can't afford basic care for an animal, you shouldn't have the animal.

So animals for millions of years have lived without vaccines and because your poor you should NOT be aloud to own a pet, ya real nice of you to decide that mother nature does NOT know best. That is one of the problems facing USA now is some people think that they know what is best for everyone else. (even though in many cases they fail to do what they say & absolutely blow a gasket when some one else tells them they should do XYZ...)
