Barn Door Project: Need Ideas

/ Barn Door Project: Need Ideas #11
I did a random search on Google for "Barn Door Rollers and Track" and have come up with a lot of information and websites. Give it a try.

As someone else has already mentioned, how about cutting the grade. Is it feasible to cut the grade back as far as the corner of the barn ? Level that area right out into a nice entrance and some usable space.

Thanks Mark. Don't know why I haven't tried that yet! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

And DON, I emailed Dano and he said "no got". Don't know if he meant no got plans or what. But the idea stuck.

Thanks ... I'll keep ya posted and prolly post some more implementation questions.

I'm somewhat surprised at "no got", because I had real good response from him. Maybe you have to buy the entire package of plans to get the doors as an add-on. I do like the idea, however. I'm going to use traditional swinging doors for the exposed side doors on my barn, and a sliding door under the lean-to roof where the weather won't get to it, but I'll be using the bi-fold for the large end door.

Dave, that's what I'm looking for! I'll have to call them to see if they can accommodate the design idea, so graciously inspired by Don. Here's the latest Idea.

Think this will fly? Gotta take door weight into consideration I spose when looking at hardware. This does NOT need to be insulated.

A few points to consider:

<ul type="square"> [*]Wind - You have the door opening in....a strong wind could push the door open
[*]Hinge - As you mentioned, the hinge is usually the weakest link
[*]Torque - When the door is in the open position, the weight of the doors will place a huge torque load on the hanging carriage. This will require that the bottom corners of the door be mounted to some sort of sliding assembly at ground level
[/list]

Of these three things, probably the most difficult to overcome is the problem of torque. I can't think of a simple solution to having the bottom corners of the door attached to the ground. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Doug,

What about a door that is similar to old style garage doors? One piece tip up and out of the way? Or even a simple set of double doors on hinges, made to look like an old carriage house door?

Just throwing out ideas /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Dave, I have to over come 3 problems.

1. Exterior grade prevents right hand door opening outward
2. Interior door would be covered by left hand door swinging inward
and
3. Door opening upward would restrict access to the 2nd story loft.

Still thinking, these are good ideas and points though ... I had the weight issue (torque as it was called) in the back of my mind ...

If you have a grade this close to the door, then I would be worried about a water problem too /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Obviously, if the barn is as old as you say, then the water must be going somewhere else.

Doug,

I think I have seen what you need.....it is the force field that protects the shuttle bay atmosphere on the Enterprise. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
