I am going to be building a a new shelter for my horses in the new pasture.
I need to build up one end of the site to make it level. Do I need to remove the top soil before I put the fill (sand/clay) down?

I recommend that a horse run-in shed be higher than the surrounding ground when possible. This allows you to better arrange drainage - an issue whenever animals hang out in close space. I would take out the top soil first. However, I'd put in gravel then landscape cloth then layer of topsoil - again to promote drainage.

Thanks for the response Mike. I am planning it to be higher than the surrounding terrain. Your idea sounds like a good idea. I will dig out the top soil then build it up to the level it needs to be using the sand/clay mix, then put gravel and the landscape cloth down and top with the existing topsoil.
