tc... it was called an engine overhaul... @ a cost of around $100.00 total price.....but gone are the days of a quick cheap fix.....enter the the new high speed engine and rod inserts...still much like the old Babbitt material just quite a bit thinner........and pricer

There may be quite a difference between the old Babbitt and the new ones aside from thickness.:D

The last engine I put babbit bushings in was a Continental Red Seal 6 cyl.
with a "Willys Super Hurricane" head...

Same basic engine drove a diverse amount of many different machines and machinery....

we have a red seal 4 on an old asphalt mixer.. has a repop MS carb on it for a ford N series ( had to drill out manifold mounting ears ).. thru a new coil on it and am running it on 12v. it was on an old etnyre asphalt mixer / sprayer we use.. it churns the bituminous emulsion inthe tank as a prop ( used to be diesel ) heater warms it, it also runs the sprayer pump..

I'd done many hours of work on that piece of.. er.. equipment.. :)

Yes Egon....you are right on with really no comparing old babbit with todays technoligy...my father hated the new technoligy...he told me one time he had bought an old Ford Modle "A" real cheap...on the trip half way home...the darn thing starting knockin' real bad.....so he pulled it over to the side of the road drained the oil then dropped the oil pan removed the bad rod piston and all.....then reinstalled the pan and dumped in the old oil....and got it home on 3 cylinders....I don't know how smooth it ran....but at least he got it home under it's own steam... of course I wasn't even thought of then....but I would have loved to been there....sorry for hijackin' this thread....but it sure brings back ol' memories of what my father called the good....once again...."good ol' days"....I gather that you have some good ol' true stories of the past....I still remember my first trip to your part of the country....refered as "Gods Country"....most of my good friends are down easteners....and if your not up to drinkin' you will be by the time you leave....I wanted to stay there...but I knew I couldn't at the time....my lady's from New Brunswick....so I may just get a chance to head your way again.....take care.....Ampa

you'd be surprised some of the old things you could do to get by.

Ever taken a bearing apart that has been shimmed? IE.. a thin strip of soda can or similar sheet shim material that was cut, and placed under the bearing shell to move it out a few thousandths to close up some tolerance, vs new shells?

I've seen many an old engine get by on a hand valve lap job, reamed ridges inthe old cyl or liner, new rings.. -MAYBEE- knurled piston skirts, and a new set of bearing shells same as the old ones, and some crocus cloth on the crank if there was a mark. slap it all together with some assy lube and then start it.. poor mans rebuild.

Can't get away with that sort of things on most of the new stuff.. but alot of the older stuff was slightly more tolerant with just what you could get away with.

Thanks for all the good information.

I ended up ordering 2 pillow block bearings and I am going to sleve the old shaft out to 2 inch. It is not exactly what I had in mind but I guess we will see how tough the pillow blocks are. Just going to under sling them and see how it works.

I wanted to set it up as a pull type or a 3 point but I am a bit concerned about the ability of the main shaft to support the weight of the rollers.
