You can't run it backwards ( I think) because a two stroke uses the crank shaft to pressurize the crank case to force the air/gas mixture from the carb to the intake ports. This pressurize mixture also forces the exhaust gasses out of the cylinder after combustion and the downward compression stroke. You would have to put the carb on the exhaust ports and the exhaust on the carb ports, etc...

You would be better off putting an extra gear between the crankshaft and transmission to reverse the rotation.

Dug my old demo mower out today, here is a better picture of it. I aquired two more mowers today, so I took a picture of my entire fleet of them, the wife has put her foot down and said no more until I get rid of some junk, she was not happy [IT IS EASIER TO BEG FOR FORGIVENESS THAN ASK FOR PERMISSION sometimes]. I was just informed this evening that derby has been moved back to 9-30-06

Some snowmobile engines run backwards for their reverse gear.

Harley golf carts run backwards for reverse too. Only problem with running backwards would be it it has a water or oil pump. Don't know if what ya got is liquid cooled or oil injected.

Nope, no oil injector pump, fan cooled, no reed valves, dual coil, dual point, single diaphram carb, dual exhaust ports, twin cylinder , fires 180 apart, yesterday, I modified an old briggs electric starter to work on 440, can mount on either side of engine , so I can crank it in either direction, between the smaller 440 flywheel and my sloppy gear alignment job, it sounds almost like a small block chevy when it cranks and the 440 even fires against the starter right before it lights off, kinda like the big bloc in my chevelle. the cool sounding starter that went on pretty easily was mostly luck, as I only had about an hours time invested in modifying everything to work. The stock briggs starter mounting bolt holes even lined up good enough to use on the 440s stock mounting holes in enginecase, although the 440 uses 6mm bolts instead of 3/8 like the briggs, that left me just the wiggle room I needed to line everything up. I began swapping the murray trans after work today around 5 p.m., got rained out by 5:30, right now I only have a two and a half car garage that is occupied by my chevelle and my wifes GS , so the demo mower progress depends largely on mother nature cooperating with me, I REALY NEED TO BUILD A POLE BARN! It is supposed to rain here all day tomorrow, so there probably wont be much more progress until midweek, will try to snap picture of starter install tomorrow afternoon and post it around 5 or 6 pm.

O.K. I stand corrected. After refreshin' my brain and looking at some diagrams and reading about some goofy English car that used a two stroke engine that was shut off and re-started backwards for reverse gear, it is possible to run some 2 strokes backwards.

I'm not sure how goofy it is. Every Ski-doo snowmobile(all 2-strokes) sold today has reverse that is produced by stopping the engine for an instant and running it in reverse. This is all accomplished without electric start. You can hear the motor stop, then re-fire in reverse. Hit the button again and it stops again, then goes back to rotating forward. Polaris is doing this as well. I own two Ski-Doo's that do it.

A lot of the older Mercury outboards ran in reverse for reverse motion also. John

Hello all, have not had time to check in for a while, I have not done anything with cub after installing electric starter from briggs engine. What spare time I have had has been spent preparing the murray demo mower and a friend of mines demo mower for the upcoming derby on the 30th of this month. I found the frame damage on the murray to be much more extensive than I had thought, requiring 2 evenings of straightening with a JD 440 log skidder, my 270s loader and a rosebud torch tip, but as of this writing, it is ready to go and , as promised, my wife will be video taping the whole thing and I plan to download the video on youtube and post a link to it on this thread, sadly the cub will not be running in this one, but there is another one scheduled for the 1st week in November and I will try to have the cub sorted out in time to compete in that one. so stay tuned!!
