Or cut completely through for 2-3 inches, then leave 1/2 inch, then another slot, etc. Spred. Weld when finished.

If you cut it into pieces, rather than part way through, you need to accurately hold it in place, and tack it back up, = more work.

Skipping areas when you are cutting it, also = more work. And, it will not bend as cleanly, in the areas where it's full thickness.

Thanks for all the tips guys! As luck would have it, a friend who works at a machine shop said it would be easier to bend a new piece on his brake then to bend my metal. He should have it ready tomorrow. Thanks for all the help... I got lucky!

Scissors jack could fit in there probably. Might bend it funny though. I liked the suggestion of cutting it and welding inthe desired position

It would be very difficult to press a pipe into the corner to spread the sides of 3/16" x 14 inches long. Maybe a 1 1/2" solid bar but not a pipe.

With a 1/16" abrasive cutoff blades on an angle grinder you could cut a slot 1/8" deep the full length of the 14" corner, bend it open, then weld up the slot and grind the corner round again.

Good you got your problem solved. As others have suggested , scoring the inside of the bend on heavier metal seems to be a good idea. Check out this video for general info.
