One other thing, the comment about 100$ handguns on any street isn't true. Legal handguns here are frequently that cheap as they are pretty useless practically speaking. Did I mention you are required to have it locked up?

Illegal handguns on the street fetch hundreds, 500$+ for crap guns that you guys would laugh at. People will buy them with just a few rounds of ammo with almost no way to get more ammo (need to show id to buy).

30 minutes north of here, I can cross the International border with my enhanced drivers license but I have to leave my concealed carry gun at home and if I want to hunt, I have to go through all kinds of BS to get my long gun into Canada.

Makes no sense so I abstain.

I actually haven't spent any tourist FRN's in Canada for a long time...and don't plan to and I did my part to finance your tourist industry in the past.....:)

By impulse I meant someone that is not currently a gun owner, when in an emotional state might think a gun is the answer.

It's the emotional state.. not the 'impulse' purchase.

buying junk food and guns shouldn't be made when in a severe emotional state.. :)

Guns aren't supposed to be for home defence in Canada, as I said, hunting, target and collection, none of which are impulsive to get started at.

Yikes?!

then what is for home defense.. baseball bats and butcher knives? fist-a-cuffs ( thought that was an austrailian thing? :) )

glad I live in a place that has rights :)

glad that you are glad to live in a place with no such rights.

as long as we are both happy :)

I think......He's indicating that the law in Canada requires that other people in the household must be aware or acknowledge in some way the the gun ownership is accepted...... not sure by any means.

Maybe another Canadian can verify.... I would spend an hour on the web searching but......It's not that high on my list of priorities I guess.
Mace! Oh.. Mace got a question for ya

Correct. In Canada a firearm license last 5 years. The initial application and each renewal process means you have to discuss gun ownership with your current spouse and ex-spouse if separated/divorced within two years. Then they will be contacted and asked a few simple questions. Just part of the process. Firearm license renewals are free and easy. If there is no classification change to your license, you do not have to retake your class or repass a test. You just submit a paper renewal application and include a current photo for identification and your current updated information. You receive a new wallet id card in the mail. Very similar to renewing your passport or drivers license.

Complete details regarding the Canadian Firearms Program can be found here:

Canadian Firearms Program

We have one governing program for all of Canada. The same site provides information for US citizens and all non-residents entering Canada with firearms. A good site to bookmark if this is you.

Its always a trade off. We don't really have to lock our doors at night, most of the home invasions here are really robberies of drug dealers. Very rarely outside of big cities do fights at bars turn into shoot outs.

Its really weird to go to the US for many of us, we generally never have to consider if someone is armed. Even in store robberies they rarely have guns, usually a knife or needle. Not terribly common for people to get hurt.

Here in rural areas the guns seem to come out in crimes like domestic disputes, murder suicides etc. Our murder rate per capita is such a tiny fraction of the US, maybe the gun laws are part of it, who knows. I don't think the registry helped at all, that thing was such a waste of money.

Up to the mid 1990's we had about 150 gun murders a year. What would it be in the US? EDIT Its about 8-10 times higher per capita in the US.
EDIT 2 - Handguns are making up more and more of our gun murders. Urban gang violence picking up the slacking murder rates.

And speaking of culural differences on pistol ownership --

Two pistol-packing seniors fined $20,000 after border gun bust
No offense but the covered wagon days line probably did not help their cause :D

Well that is just a dumb story. Not only did they not take the time and initiative to check into the correct way to enter another country (Canada) with firearms, they were directly asked by Canadian Border Guards to declare if they were carrying any firearms and lied stating they had no firearems. The end result was they paid a significant price for lieing to authorities.

Had they simply told the truth, pleaded ignorance and cooperated with the authorities I'm sure the outcome would have been very different.

Yes they would have been given a crash course on Canadian firearm laws:

- forced to unload their firearms and store them safely and securely
- handed the Non-Resident Firearm Declaration (form CAFC 909) and as they had more then three firearms, a Non-Resident Firearm Declaration Continuation Sheet (form CAFC 910)
- told to complete the forms in triplicate
- then they would have been directed to drive their motorhome back into the US to visit the closest Walmart to buy gun trigger locks and a locking ammunition container and told to return and try again tomorrow.

This time being honest and smartly declaring they are carrying firearms, handing over the appropriate forms, demonstrate the firearms are unloaded and secured, receive their stamped approval and copy of the forms and off to Alaska they would proceed.
