Best deskunking remedy for dogs?

No, it hasn't happened yet. My last dog lived 14 years and never got skunked or porcupined. Karma says that I'm about due. At any rate I want tomake sure that I have whay I need on hand.

I read of one recipe whixh alledgedly neutralises the odor. Too bad I didn't think to save it.

This would also be a good time to share any dog vs skunk tales whoch you have.

Bathing in tomato juice is supposed to work. If it doesn't work, you can always use the leftover juice to make Bloody Marys.

Our last three dogs have been Labs, all outdoor dogs. We have been lucky so far. The first two never tangled with skunks. Our latest, a 14-month old, shot out of her kennel when I let her out at 6 a.m. one day last week at the farm. Much barking ensued, followed by the dreaded aroma wafting through the air. Fortunately, she returned when I called her. There was just a hint of skunk odor on her fur, but it wasn't noticeable after her morning romp in the creek.

I have always heard to use Tomato juice as the guy's said. Our dogs got a "glancing" shot and my wife dumped a box of Arm& Hammer on both and it seemed to work, spray was a" low dose" though.

Tomato juice makes the dog turn red nothing else.

This works.

Small box of baking soda
small bottle of hydrogen peroxide 8 or 10 oz
couple of good squirts of dish soap
gallon of water
mix it up it does not keep as there is a chemical reaction between the peroxide and baking soda

wet down animal with the solution a spounge or small towel works specially the areas with the spray on it. wet it good.

Leave on for about 5 minutes yea its gonna bleach out some hair you want a pretty dog or a good smelling one

rinse off the mixture.

It is the chemical reaction of the mixture with the skunk oil that deminishes the smell.


Last no matter what you do there is gonna be some smell left but this stuff works better than about anything else.

You can look it up on the web there are lots of places that it is listed some give exact measurements in spoon fulls and cups and the such. I have found my mixture works well even on my poodles that seem to attract shunks.

My neighbor used Dawn, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda. It worked pretty well

I tried the tomato juice many years ago on my West Highland White terrier, ended up with an orange dog that smelled like a skunk.

Tomato juice, sliced lemons and potatoes cut in half. All mixed together and use potatoes to scrub with. I have used this on my dogs and myself included.

Over the years our house dog was "skunked" 3 times. The first time we tried tomato juice, soaps... nothing worked so the poor thing had to spend 2 weeks in the basement. Then one day I saw an article somewhere supposedly written by a chemical engineer that had developed a recipe for de-skunking his dog. My wife kept the recipe and at the next skunking I mixed up some and tried it. Worked instantly, smell gone, no more banishment to the basement.

The recipe is simple:
1 part household strength (3%) hydrogen peroxide
1 part water
a few drops of detergent (for a wetting agent)

Just pour it on and work it in with a rag. The results are immediate.

Did the tomato juice with the family dog years ago. It helps but the scent lingers, especially when their fur is wet.

A lab's fur is wet every chance he can find. :thumbsup:
My last dog stuck her nose in a pine marten set when she was young and had a 110 conibear snap shut on it. The lure had "essence of pepe de plue' for a base which I believe taught her to leave them alone.

Funny how things always happen at 8:00 on a Sunday night. That's why it's good to be prepared.

Jim Brown is spot on....Tomato juice was a waste of a gallon of the stuff. 2 months later, I took the dogs to the Vet. He walks in the room wrinkles up his nose and says..."MY GOD who got skunked".

This is all you get when you tooo mat toh juice your dogs:

I've used a product called "Nature's Miracle Skunk Remover". Comes in a quart bottle from a pet supply store. Its has an amino acid in it that breaks down the skunk oil immediately. I wipe it over the dog(s) using a mit I got for washing a car. The smell is gone immediately. If there is a lingering smell, you missed a spot. Works on clothes, furniture, rugs and car seats.

For me its all over in 5 minutes. Then they have to hit the bathtub for a shower with Selsen Blue shampoo. The drying towels are even free of the smell.

Agree x3 here on the natures miracle skunk remover from petsmart. My german shorthair gets sprayed so often I keep 2 bottles at hand at all times. Stuff works great. Love the dog but he is about as dumb as a bag of hammers when it comes to avoiding skunks.

We have used this seveal times on our dogs and it works great. One additional point, you need to get a new collar. You will never get the smell out of the old one--leather or nylon or whatever

+++ on the peroxide,baking soda, soap make sure you wash their face and nose. Ditto on replacing the collar . worked very well after my English Springer tangles with momma skunk. Later trapped momma and 3 of her kits the other 4 were circling the cage. target practice with a .22 inside the barn.

Our previous Lab gave me some insight into the problem and my buddies hunting dogs confirmed it -- tomato juice,febreeze etc all work to some extent. A days retrieving in a swamp works perfectly -- no smell except the wet dog one
The recipes above with peroxide also work and if you don't want a lighter color dog, try the pet smart stuff -- it works too
The big issue is always isolating the dog quickly so the smell does not end up on upholstery, truck interiors etc.
You could also smoke for forty years or so and your sense of smell will be so diminished it won't matter
