Thanks Peter.

When choosing a motor oil to use as hydraulic oil (in my PT422 specifically), should I be concerned with whether is contains "friction modifiers" or not? For example, I used to use Rotella T 5w40 in my bike so it wouldn't adversely affect the "wet clutch" operation. Are there those types of concerns in the PT hydraulic system?

Thanks again everyone!

Dear KMA,

The green series 4XX don't have integral hydraulic brakes, which simplifies the fluid demands. I think you have quite a bit of freedom to choose.

All the best,

Peter

Given the wetbrakes and gearotors in the 14XX and 18XX series, I wouldn't rush to use additives in those PTs.

All the best,

Peter

Peter,
My 1845 uses a dry brake system. The rotor is mounted external to the wheel motor. My understanding is that all 1800 series units use this system with the Brake Tender (TM)

My bad! Ouch 2 for 2.

The problem with wide viscosity range oils is that the additives that give the high viscosity range break down under high shear conditions so you often want the narrowest range you can get away with. In some cases, that needs to be a wide range.

On the bright side there's not allot of shear points in a hydraulics's only system. Mainly (depending on pump style) the hydraulic pump, unlike a engine that has multiple points that can shear the oil down over time.

Hey DieselPower! Nice to hear from you. Just goes to show my ignorance. I would have thought that the close tolerances in a hydraulic system combined with high pressure and flow would have caused shear.

Actually when you think about it there are less places to shear in a hydraulic system. The hoses don't, cylinders don't, pumps and wheel motors may a little but the tolerances found there are not as tight as you would in a modern gas or diesel engine. Tolerances in modern electronic HUEI injector's are measured in the microns where the tolerances in a pump are in the thousandths.
