A large portion of what drives manufacturers in the selection of lubricants for their products these days is fuel economy. Every 1/10th of a MPG they can save using a better lubricant get's them that much closer to meeting MPG standards.

DP. that may be true for autos, but motorcycles, atv,s and other motor driven objects don't have an mpg standard to meet . Yet they still spec. synthetic oil. I know you already (as you are in the lube business ;) ) it lubes better & the engine runs cooler temps & in ,alot cases, they can get more hp running synthetic.

No argument here about getting better performance out the the higher end lubes. I was mainly trying to say that one of the major reasons many manufacturers of over the road vehicles are switching to higher end lubes is fuel economy. That's the name of the game these day's for them. When you drive huge vehicles like we do here in the US they have to squeeze every ounce of fuel economy they can out of a gallon of gas/diesel. Some might be amazed how many millions of dollars are spent every year in designing components that offer lower frictional power loss.

We are at 315 per gal for diesel as of today  . Who knows what it will be in the am:confused:

3.15??? Man I'm moving. Paid 3.75 this morning for diesel and 3.19 for regular. Go figure. (course I just paid 15.00/gal for a drum of nitro methane, so I'm not complainin a bit.):p

Last time I checked, the chevy vet nor dodge viper, jags , etc, etc, didn't come with miget motors . "eternal life" mabe not longer life less wear sure

There is THREE! How about the HUNDREDS of other models of cars made??
And lets not forget all other sorts of "internal combustion" engines...such as the "tiny" tractor engines out there running around.

I have nothing against syn oils..and even installed the Rotella syn in my own yesterday...even though many scream its not a REAL syn oil..?? For various reasons. But no one will ever convince me that "true" syn oils..or whatever...will ever be a cure that overides proper oil changes..etc.

There is etc, etc after the 3 .These 3 I do know about . I"am quit sure there are others as I don't own every egine driven object out there

my atv , motorcycle , small engine .specs. synthetic. I'am quite sure the tractor world will catch up (if they already haven"t ) to the use of synthetic in new tractors

You might want to look under extended oil drains and read about trucks going 60-100 k mi. between changes. Take apart the motor after 500 k mi. and the engine is still real good. Synthetics and good filters are the reason. We don't need to get all upset over oil guys. My bota will be getting synthetic of some kind for cold winter starts, my 05 diesel pickup gets Amsoil or Mobil 1. Why, cause it's a 10 k for a rebuild  We need our stuff to last a long time these days, and Amsoil keeps coming back with oil analysis as still good for continued use. My friend has 76k mi. on his Amsoil in his f 250 (7.3). The report says it's still good oil. He uses expensive Amsoil filters and that's the key.

You just keep believing all that!

Cant speak for the Amsoil portion of ihookem's post since i don't use it. I can vouch for the high mileage intervals though. I average 55k-60k with synthetic, and thats changing the oil when the TBN gets down to 5, regardless if the analysis says the oil is good to go further. There are tons of school buses in Texas exceeding 70k between oil changes. Everyone knows most schools are poor and try to save money in anyway they can. Using extended drain intervals with synthetics and analysis allows them to save thousands of dollars each year, which pays for the higher price of the synthetics and then some. Those results of course aren't guaranteed, though they are very possible and very common. You always have to factor in the load, environment, temperature, and speed, etc.

I never said people dont do it... But who pays for a school bus engine thats run..lets say 70K miles with 1 oil change..and it blows? ( Take a guess!!)

If Syn oils were the magic cure-all that some tout them to be...companys such as Cummins and CAT wouldnt give 500K mile warrantys...IF you change oil every 15K miles....they'd give you that warranty and demand only one..single oil change!!!

Never said syn oils arent good...and never said that SOME shouldn't definately be using them...but it aint the "magic" that some will lead you to think it is
