And THAT will get you NOTHING but a flat wallet! Id rather get into a legal battle with GM than Chevron....:D

I'd rather not get into it at all but sometimes you have to. My wallet couldn't get much flatter than it already is.

I would not be surprised if a synthetic oil company (or any of them, for that matter) would stand behind their product if it was shown to be the cause of a problem. My point was that a person's beef is with the aftermarket supplier at that point, not the OEM. And you could very well be successful in filing a claim.

That's why it makes no sense to me to use extended drain intervals during a warranty period. After that, it's up to you because any repairs from that point on are on you anyway.

I do have to agree with Sully, as I too believe the advantages of synthetic oil have been way oversold. OTOH, if I bought a piece of equipment that spec'd synthetic oil, such as a VW TDI, you better believe I'd use it. But not every piece of equipment needs it or benefits from its use.

Im with ya there! Whatever the maker specifys..I want something BETTER if I can find it. I'll still do maintainence at the makers specified intervals..and that give me the "warm and fussy feeling" that its NOT going to be ME that causes it to go south..ahead of time..or maybe forever??

That's not hard to do. And if they do, you'd better be able to prove that you adhered to their recommended oil and oil change schedule. If you didn't, your recourse is to take it up with the oil manufacturer, not the engine manufacturer.

If you change your own oil , filters , etc, you can't prove that you did it per their recommended schedule unless, ( same is true with vehicle manufactures) they ( the dealers) do the maintaince so , they have the records .. Sure You can keep reciepts , but that proves nothing. These folkes can (& do ) get out of any warranty claims they want

I keep logs on every item...tractor..motorhome..etc ALONG WITH the reciepts for items used. The reciepts get stapeled onto the corresponding page in the logbook. Someone think I might have ate those filters and gallons of oil? Lets get serious!

Your logs mean nothing. A log that you keep doesn't mean you changed oil on time every time. They have no idea what you do with the oil you buy. All they have is a log that you kept !! I can run my tractor , truck , or whatever as long as I want b-4 I change the oil as long as I log it down & kept the reciept I'am good to go. Boy,that's hard core evidence that I changed my oil on time every time. You say if it comes to a warranty clain & they find out you went over the recommend service they could deny a claim. What your telling everyone is you are covered because you kept your records & recipts:rolleyes: . Anyone that believes that . I need to sell them some land I've got:rolleyes:

Kenmac, you are far too cynical on this one. Yes, automakers may try to deny warranty claims, but even a little dispute with them (not necessarily even requiring that you hire a lawyer) will usually get them to do the right thing, if you are in the right. And, FWIW, keeping a log of when you did work and your receipts for oil/filters/etc is very strong proof that you did the work claimed. To refute it the auto company would basically have to prove that you committed a fraud, such as by documenting you returning all that oil and filters each and every time. Good luck with that.

I would highly recommend that anyone who does their own maintenance keep receipts for the materials (I am now keeping flaps off the oil filter box showing brand and part # - not sure how one would fabricate that type of proof!). However, even if you don't keep those receipts, that doesn't necessarily mean you can't win a warranty claim when the manufacturer is claiming (without proof) that you did NOT do the maintenance.

Wrong , I had a vehicle that had a 36 mo 36000 mile bumper to bumper warranty, With 10,000 inles on the vehicle the plastic dash cracked. I went to the dealer. They denyed the claim saying that that vehicle manufacture wouldn't pay for a new dash. Now, we aren't talking about an engine were talking about a plastic dash. After talking to the dealer. They said if the factory rep would agree to pay for the dash they would install. 2 days later I went back do the dealership & the factory rep & the dealer rep. came out of a back room to meet with me. They had the plan in place b-4 I arrived. The factory rep said they wouldn't replace the dash under warranty because he had never seen a dash crack b-4. They wanted proof that the plastic just cracked .( not based on some records) ( I could have made up a record that said the dash cracked all by itself ,but that wouldn't have meant squat ! So, until you have been there ( where I was ) you can't make the claim that the dealer or factory will always do the right thing cause , As you said I was in the RIGHT ,BUT no way to prove it. The factory rep also called other dealers in the area to notify them just incase I tried to go to another dealer !! I had to pay for the dash & have it installed. TRUE STORY ! I guess if I had made a record of the dash since the vehicle was new, they would have paid the bill:rolleyes:

Sounds like you got screwed by a bad dealer and a bad manufacturer rep. If you call a lawyer who does this kind of work, and you have a receipt from the service visit (or if you're still within the warranty period now) it should be an easy thing to get fixed. It doesn't sound like they had any legal basis for the denial. A warranty is a contract, and it can be enforced legally like any other contract.
