It has been my experience that oil gets contaminated. I have gone over on dino oil as well a few thousand but the contaminants are the thing that I don't like.
And, I use good filters. Or at least I think they are. :D

I never said people dont do it... But who pays for a school bus engine thats run..lets say 70K miles with 1 oil change..and it blows? ( Take a guess!!)

If Syn oils were the magic cure-all that some tout them to be...companys such as Cummins and CAT wouldnt give 500K mile warrantys...IF you change oil every 15K miles....they'd give you that warranty and demand only one..single oil change!!!

Never said syn oils arent good...and never said that SOME shouldn't definately be using them...but it aint the "magic" that some will lead you to think it is

The school bus owner does. In my area of MD and PA school bus's are privately owned and operated under contract for the local school district. They pay for the bus, all maintenance and all repairs. It all comes out of their pockets, not the tax payer as I think you might have been implying. I edited out the oil brand to save from any brand wars, let's just say I'm affiliated with them. :)

Edited to add:

Come to think of it, here's a good example of a school bus fleet. Running a better oil and standard filters. Using a higher quality oil and lab analysis they have saved quite a bit of money with no ill effects. That's the whole reason for running UOA's in the first place is to catch potential problems before they become critical failures. The side benefit is that you can extend your drain intervals.

I've been here a long time and no one has ever claimed syn oil is "magic". ihookem certainly did not.

If someone does an oil analysis, as ihookem did, and the oil is still good, why change it?

Oil analysis results are facts, not opinions and not magic.

Then explain why engine companys such as CAT and Cummins WONT extend any engine warranty if you are using SYN oils??? And they even brand and SELL BOTH types. To them its change oil per the prescribed time/miles/hours or your warranty if "ka-put"!

And Id think..??..they have more than a little experience with engines and oils..!

And that cost of the blown engine is passed right back to the school board ( hence TAXpayers) and the very next contract! No different than fuel price increases. The fuel price may be locked in for a period of time ( 2-3 years maybe) but after that..increase!

The company cant continue to function if their amaintainence costs...etc...go up and that cost ISNT passed on to ..in this case...the school board.

Personally..I dont look to oil analysis to be able to "extend" my oil change intervals...I look at it as a tool to tell me whats going to pot ( if anything) inside the engine. I dont use enough oil in a years time to worry over any extended change times...regarless of the oil Im using...I change as per prescribed by that engine's maker.

I missed the part where I became the spokesman for CAT and Cummins.

No. In the event of engine damage, they have to prove it was caused by an oil failure.

No more experience than Porsche and Chevy who recommend syn.

You also avoided identifying who on TBN called syn oil magic.

That's not hard to do. And if they do, you'd better be able to prove that you adhered to their recommended oil and oil change schedule. If you didn't, your recourse is to take it up with the oil manufacturer, not the engine manufacturer.

I never said YOU were. I just asked WHY wont those 2 companys extend warrantys if you ARE using syn oils..??
No. In the event of engine damage, they have to prove it was caused by an oil failure.
And all "I" would have to do is take MY gaggle of lawyers and fight them in court...Yeah...right!
No more experience than Porsche and Chevy who recommend syn.
In SOME of their vehicles! Not 100% of them. If..IF it will allow better MPG ( one of syn oils claims)..AND / OR allow longer engine life ( another of syn oils claims) then GM as an example would install it in every vehicle and stipulate it MUST BE USED in each ( but..they dont!)
You also avoided identifying who on TBN called syn oil magic.

No single individual...but "some"..."many" express great claims ..usually about 1-2 specific oils...claiming their product will allow the buyer to do "this and that".

Ive never said that SOME ( all syns are not created equal) arent better than "dinosaur fat"...but they sure dont impress me to be "as great as" some claim.

And BTW...syn oil is..IS in my little Kubota now...for more reasons that 1

And THAT will get you NOTHING but a flat wallet! Id rather get into a legal battle with GM than Chevron....:D
