/ Best way to fill up CK35 diesel tank? #22
I have two of these:

Northern Tool Diesel Can

They have a handle on the top and on the back (90 degrees apart). That allows me to get the filler spout all setup, grab the can by both handles, tip it like I'm going to fill over the ground to test that the no-spill feature is working correctly and tighten if something isn't sealed. Then lift to tank and depress the outer anti-spill thing to start diesel flowing. It self-vents -- takes a few seconds for venting to get going, but about a 70 degree angle w/ two hands on the can makes for zero spill when filling (the anti-spill spring loaded setup can be backed off to reduce flow when it gets close to the top).

I see the following looks like it might even be nicer -- same can, but possible even better anti-spill spout:

Other Northern tool setup

It still has the two hand handle setup w/ a lever for controlling flow while can is upside down.

Also - the can is oversized beyond 5 gallons enough to add as much powerservice as necessary. I usually mix up 5 gallons at a time for my 5 gallon tank CK-20.

One tip -- once in a while I turn over the rubber gasket since it tends to "curl" after a while so I always get a good seal when closing the cap for storage, or setting up the spout for filling.

There's 3 reviews on Northern tool for the first link above -- have a read of those for more info. I'm quite happy w/ my setup.

I have two 5 gallon plastic diesel containers, won't dispense until nozzle is pushed towards the container. They have two handles on them, 90 deg apart like MALK315 described. I just run the machine until it is at the empty mark, then put the whole 5 gallons in. It is a bit of a bear to get the 5 gals up there, the 2 handles help, stick the nozzle in the tank. There is a hook on the side of the nozzle, catch that on the filler neck of the fuel tank, let the weight of the fuel push container down against nozzle and it fills up... No fuss, no muss, no funnel... just a little bother with the weight of the fuel getting it up there in the first place. When you lift the container up... there is a spring that pushes the nozzles away from the container and it shuts the valve off. I have put 45 hrs on the machine since I got it early Feb, it came full of fuel... I have only had to put in 10 gals since. :D I am now down to 1/4 tank... so I got to think about refilling my containers and deal with this again. I think I bought the containers at Wally World.

The exact same can I have, however, your description allows the reader to understand how the filler works, where my description first confused me than the reader.

Hope all had a great 4th.

I use a giant funnel and a 5 gallon NATO can without the spout, works ok.

First, find a diesel can that's not Nader-ized and will actually pour fuel. Or drill a hole in whatever you bought recently and add a sheet metail screw for the vent stop. Bas . . . ds. I've spiled more freakin' fuel trying to pour stuff out of the government improved fuel cans than I ever did with the old ones.

I use a 1/2 gallon round plastic jug that hummingbird nectar came in from Wally World (yeah, I'm a geek). It was what was on hand when I needed a funnel more rigid than a milk jug and bigger than any I had on hand of the usual automotive type.

It works well. The handle wedges nicely and keeps it from moving about and it's rigid enough to pour into (with appropriate can mods). Just look for a wide mouth, round plastic something with the most rigid plast construction you can find.

Alternatively, you can always hold a stupid-can above the tank and siphon.

I have the two handled and single handled fuel cans - the two handled are nice. I use a funnel with a fuel sock to remove debris and water. Therefore, it is a pain to hold the can over the funnel. So i hook a tie down strap (not the ratcheting style) to the ceiling located such that it holds the tipped gas can in the right location. I start with the can upright and the strap long and lift and tighten the strap to the right height to pour. Works pretty well.

I have a dk55 and those dreaded yellow plastic 5 gal cans that don't vent. I quickly stick the knozzel in the tank and set the can on the front tire and walk away. When I get back there's still a little in the can and I have to hold it at an akward angle to drain it out.

I just put together a fuel tank and, for the first time, filled my CK20 without spilling a drop. I used a 15 gallon race fuel drum that I had and put a tire valve in the large bung and welded a 1/2" pipe into the small one. I tapped the pipe for an air line fitting and used a ball valve to turn it off. I used a piece of air line between the ball valve and tank. I pump a few pounds of air into the tank and it forces the fuel out the line. No pump needed but it isn't very quick because of the 1/4" ID air hose.

I cut the bottom off a 32 oz gateraid bottle to use as a funnel.

This works very well, until I get one of the crank siphons, I just remove the cap, insert the gateraid bottle, stand up on the drivers platform and pour with the bottle resting on the hood bracket.

I am also considering some sort of funnel that I could strap to the bracket and have an easier time at it.

Suggest that you look into a battery powered (D cell) liquid (gas, diesel, water, etc.) transfer pump. The're less than $20.00 and work wonderful. It takes less than 3 minutes to empty 5 gallon can and won't spill a drop.

i was loking for a water pump and came across this Page Not Found

submersible pump for water or diesel I never heard of it before

tommu

Looks like a manual bilge pump used on boats. That would work just might be a workout too..

Rancho (who now uses the battery powered transfer pump that others have noted)

Try a shaker siphon instead of a bulb squeezer rig... works great. Balance the plastic refill jug between the dash and the steering wheel, install the shaker hose between the jug and your tractor tank and give ‘er a few shakes to start the siphon going. Walk away and let ‘er suck the fuel right into your tractor. It’s quite miraculous to watch! Don’t smoke while doing it though. Here’s a link to one but you can get them Walmart,,etc

Radarrick is right.I have those 20.00 transfer pumps and that is the way to go.I bought two of them, one for diesel and one for regular gas. Filling is a breeze.

I have doubts about using this pump with my DK45s. My fuel fill is on top of the hood, near the rear. The hose on the pump is short so it looks like I would need to lift the 5-gal fuel can plus the pump to the top of the tractor and then find a stable location for the can. Also it looks like the pump dip tube and hose would be dripping Diesel after each fill operation and would need wiping or storage where drips don't matter and dirt will not contaminate. I am thinking about switching to 2.5 gal cans (I'm in my 70s) but it's not clear how a pump like this would help much. What am I missing?
